NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 On paper, the song might be an unusual pairing, or something resembling Mad Libs. Two Atlanta rappers with idiosyncratic styles \u2014 Offset’s melodic, aggressive flow<\/a> and the dexterous lyricist JID \u2014<\/a> speaking the same language on \u201cBodies.\u201d<\/p>\n Their collaboration, largely recorded in China, arrives atop a sample of nu-metal band Drowning Pool’s 2001 cut \u201cBodies.\u201d It’s become a 2025 Billboard Hot 100 hit of their own, and it doubles as an ode to self-determination \u2014 standing your ground and working toward evolution.<\/p>\n \u201cAs soon as he played it, it was like history,\u201d JID says of hearing their \u201cBodies\u201d for the first time. \u201cThe production is one of my favorite compositions I ever recorded over.\u201d<\/p>\n It also serves as a kind of introduction of a new era for both artists, who both have new albums this month.<\/p>\n A new perspective from JID<\/p>\n In the post-“Bodies\u201d glow, JID released his fourth album, \u201cGod Does Like Ugly\u201d last week. The title is a play on his grandmother’s Southern colloquialism, \u201cGod don’t like ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s more intentional,\u201d he says of his new release. \u201cThe last project was more of an origin story, where I came from until now,\u201d he says of 2022’s elastic \u201cThe Forever Story.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis one is closer, up to date, of where I am mentally \u2014 and my perspective of the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n That’s immediately clear on the virtuosic \u201cGod Does Like Ugly\u201d and its formidable list of collaborators, Clipse,<\/a> Ciara, Don Toliver and Vince Staples<\/a> among them.<\/p>\n It’s also evident on the lead single, \u201cWRK,\u201d an examination of ambition, and the surprising run up to his album release. JID embarked on the J. Cole-inspired<\/a> \u201cDollar & A Dream\u201d Tour, a series of exclusive performances across the U.S., where attendees only needed to pay a buck for entry.<\/p>\n \u201cI just thought it was a cool idea. A great way to be intimate and see your fans,\u201d he says. \u201cGetting to perform the new songs for them every night is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n Offset looks inward<\/p>\n Drive is certainly something the pair have in common, but when it comes to their new releases, the comparisons end there. Offset will release \u201cKiari,\u201d his third solo album on Aug. 22. The title is his legal name \u2014 a direct reflection of the album he calls \u201ca look in the mirror.\u201d He says it’s a collection of \u201cdifferent versions of Offset, which comes from Kiari \u2026 I’m always trying to rebrand and recreate.\u201d<\/p>\n Where his last release, \u201cSet It Off,\u201d sought to \u201cbring rap back, not so much melody,\u201d as he told The Associated Press<\/a> in 2023, \u201cKiari\u201d combines the best of both worlds.<\/p>\n He says he’s pulling from \u201clife events\u201d on the album. \u201cIt feels very personal,\u201d he says. \u201cNot just about what I’m speaking on, but how serious the moment in time is for me to prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201c’Set It Off’ was a freedom,\u201d he adds, proof that he could shine as a solo artist outside of Migos, the group that launched his career.<\/p>\n \u201cKiari,\u201d instead, is \u201cme, for what I am. And recognizing who I am, because I feel like sometimes you could get lost in trying to please other people and trying to do what they want you to do. So, this is like my rebellion. My rebellion album.\u201d<\/p>\n And he’s got an A-list crew of collaborations helping him rebel: Not just JID, but also Gunna,<\/a> Key Glock, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Ty Dolla $ign, Teezo Touchdown and perhaps most surprising of all, John Legend<\/a> on the emotive \u201cNever Let Go.\u201d He says it is for the late Takeoff,<\/a> his Migos bandmate and cousin, who died in a 2022 shooting.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a song for him,\u201d says Offset. \u201cThe last album, I had not did a song (for him) because I couldn’t during the time.\u201d<\/p>\n Even still, \u201cNever Let Go\u201d was a challenge. \u201cThe song is beautiful. I was able to be vulnerable on the song and speak and say certain things I’ve never said out loud.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cKiari\u201d is also Offset’s first new album since the birth of his third daughter<\/a> with rapper Cardi B<\/a> in September, shortly after she filed for divorce<\/a> from him.<\/p>\n It is likely fans will read the final track on the album, \u201cMove On,\u201d to be about their relationship. He says it’s simply \u201cabout moving on peacefully. That’s what the message is supposed to be: moving on peacefully.\u201d<\/p>\n He chosen to end the album that way to \u201cend that chapter, just move on. It’s over and done with. It was great while it lasted. That shouldn’t be the topic for neither one of us no more.
