Celebrated American comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed he has obtained Italian citizenship, following Donald Trump\u2019s comments that Kimmel\u2019s show could be \u201cnext\u201d on the chopping block after CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert\u2019s show<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kimmel, a longtime critic of Trump, referred to his dual citizenship during an appearance on\u00a0The Sarah Silverman Podcast<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did get Italian citizenship,\u201d Kimmel shared \u2013 something which was confirmed by Italian news agency Ansa, who said that he obtained Italian citizenship this year after proving his ancestral lineage.<\/p>\n

He noted that several American A-listers \u2013 including Ellen DeGeneres<\/strong><\/a> and Rosie O\u2019Donnell<\/strong><\/a> – had also sought dual citizenship considering the current state of affairs in the US, with Trump targeting media personalities<\/strong><\/a> who don\u2019t politically align with him and are vocally critical of his administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on is\u2026 as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it\u2019s so much worse. It\u2019s just unbelievable. I feel like it\u2019s probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel has often criticised Trump in monologues on\u00a0his show Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He has also spoken out against the president when hosting the Oscars<\/strong><\/a>, memorably fueling their feud in 2024 by reading out Trump\u2019s criticism of the ceremony before the announcement of Best Picture.<\/p>\n

Trump posted on Truth Social during the ceremony and called Kimmel a bad host, to which Kimmel responded: \u201cWell, thank you President Trump. Thank you for watching, I\u2019m surprised you\u2019re still up \u2013 isn’t it past your jail time?\u201d<\/p>\n

The host has also referred to Trump as \u201cCommander-In-Thief”, \u201cHis MAGA-Sty”, \u201cJabba The Pizza Hut\u201d and \u201cThe Shart of the Deal\u201d – in reference to Trump\u2019s book, \u201cThe Art of the Deal\u201d.<\/p>\n

The news of Kimmel\u2019s\u00a0dual citizenship comes after the bombshell news that CBS was ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/strong><\/a>, which pulls no punches when it comes to slamming Trump.<\/p>\n

In a press conference last week, Trump stated: \u201c(Jimmy) Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They\u2019re next. They\u2019re going to be going. I hear they\u2019re going to be going. I don\u2019t know, but I would imagine because they\u2019d get \u2014 you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump doubled down in a Truth Social post: \u201cNext up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel, and then, a weak, and very insecure, Jimmy Fallon. The only real question is, who will go first?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel fired back with an Instagram post referencing Trump\u2019s friendship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m hearing you\u2019re next. Or maybe it\u2019s just another wonderful secret\u201d – a reference to a line in a letter to Epstein<\/strong><\/a> that Trump has denied writing that expresses hope that \u201cevery day be another wonderful secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel\u2019s fellow comedian Rosie O\u2019Donnell recently shared fears that the show The View would also be axed for not bowing down to Trump.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell, who was a host on the show from 2006 to 2007 and has frequently feuded with Trump, wrote: \u201cYou know what I just read today? ABC is \u2018reviewing the liberal bias\u2019 on \u2018The View\u2019. The show with five women speaking their own opinions. That\u2019s the threat now. They say they\u2019re not cancelling it, they\u2019re just \u2018reviewing the bias,\u2019 which is code for \u2013 we\u2019re gonna cancel it, we\u2019re just trying to soften you up first.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedian\u00a0moved to Ireland after Trump was re-elected, and has faced threats from Trump over her US citizenship<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kimmel has hosted the ABC late-night comedy show\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live!\u00a0for 22 years. The current contract for the show runs out in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
