Chubby Checker would much rather perform in front of a live audience than attend his own induction ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Twist\u201d singer explained his reasoning for skipping the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in November at a recent concert in Des Plaines, Illinois, Future Rock Legends reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI told my manager, \u2018Make sure when we go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, that I\u2019m doing what I love doing most: being in front of an audience. A live audience. Not a television audience,\u2019\u201d the 83-year-old said in a video posted to Bluesky<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cShe got me a show and the Rock Hall says, \u2018We want you to come here this day and be here.\u2019 I said, \u2018We\u2019re not coming…we have a gig,\u2019\u201d Checker explained.<\/p>\n Organizers wanted Checker to forget about the gig, to which he replied, \u201cYou never forget about gigs.\u201d<\/p>\n Checker added that his reason for skipping the ceremony is \u201cto show that I\u2019m alive.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy dream is still being fulfilled and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is happening all at the same time,\u201d he added, according to another video posted to Bluesky<\/a>.<\/p>\n The chart-topping singer is not the only musician who won\u2019t be attending the Hall\u2019s induction ceremony. Legendary bassist Carol Kaye, who was part of a group of session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew, revealed in June<\/a> that she is boycotting this year\u2019s ceremony as well.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople have been asking: NO I won\u2019t be there,\u201d Kaye wrote in a since-deleted<\/a> Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cI am declining the RRHOF awards show (and Denny Tedesco process)… because it wasn\u2019t something that reflects the work that Studio Musicians do and did in the golden era of the 1960s Recording Hits.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Rolling Stone<\/a>, Kaye was featured in Tedesco\u2019s 2008 documentary, \u201cThe Wrecking Crew,\u201d about the collective that recorded songs with The Beach Boys<\/a>, Phil Spector, The Monkees and more in the 1960s and \u201870s. However, she objected to the Wrecking Crew name, which came from drummer Hal Blaine.<\/p>\n Kaye said she started as a jazz guitarist who \u201cgot into recording good music\u201d in the \u201850s with artists like Sam Cooke. She once replaced a bassist who failed to show for a studio session and soon found it \u201ceasy… to invent good bass lines\u201d \u2014 but still gave credit to the group of collaborators.<\/p>\n \u201cYou are always part of a TEAM, not a solo artist at all\u2026.there were always 350-400 Studio Musicians (AFM Local 47 Hollywood) working in the busy 1960s, and called that ONLY \u2026.since 1930s, I was never a \u2018wrecker\u2019 at all\u2026.that\u2019s a terrible insulting name,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI refuse to be part of a process that is something else rather than what I believe in, for others\u2019 benefit and not reflecting on the truth \u2013 we all enjoyed working with EACH OTHER.\u201d<\/p>\n Checker is most famous for \u201cThe Twist,\u201d which hit No. 1 in 1960 and was named the top song on Billboard\u2019s all-time Hot 100 chart. His decades-long career also includes \u201cPony Time,\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s Twist Again\u201d and his version of \u201cLimbo Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n Checker, who was eligible since 1986, will be inducted<\/a> into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Nov. 8 along with Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper<\/a>, Bad Company, Outkast, Soundgarden and the White Stripes.
