Jack W. Batman<\/a>, a Tony-winning Broadway producer from New Jersey, has died.<\/p>\n Batman, whose recent hit productions include George Clooney\u2019s \u201cGood Night and Good Luck\u201d<\/a> and \u201cJohn Proctor is the Villain<\/a>,\u201d starring Sadie Sink<\/a>, was 81.<\/p>\n Batman\u2019s husband, director and actor Sidney J. Burgoyne, shared in an obituary<\/a> he wrote for Playbill that Batman died<\/a> of pancreatic cancer at the Actors Fund Home<\/a> in Englewood Aug. 1.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a great season for theatre<\/a>,\u201d Batman posted on Instagram in May, sharing a list of shows he produced that received Tony nominations.<\/p>\n Besides \u201cGood Night and Good Luck\u201d and \u201cJohn Proctor is the Villain,\u201d another recent Tony-nominated play Batman produced was \u201cThe Roommate<\/a>,\u201d starring Mia Farrow<\/a> and Patti LuPone<\/a>.<\/p>\n Burgoyne writes that Batman, who was born in Camden, grew up with his mother, Kay, taking him to see local performances, like operettas at Camden Catholic High School<\/a>.<\/p>\n Batman later became a stage performer himself and moved to New York in 1969.<\/p>\n George Clooney with the cast of “Good Night and Good Luck” on the play’s opening night in April.<\/p>\n He was hired as an agent at the William Morris Agency after working his way up the ladder from the company mailroom.<\/p>\n In his long career in theater, he would hold the jobs actor, director, writer, manager and producer.<\/p>\n Batman and Burgoyne would\u2019ve been married 12 years on Wednesday and were together for almost 50 years, having been a couple since 1976.<\/p>\n Batman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, Burgoyne says.<\/p>\n \u201cAll of my life, in business and in my personal life, if a door opened, I walked through,\u201d Batman said after receiving the health news. \u201cThis is just one more door I\u2019m walking through.\u201d<\/p>\n He was working until shortly before his death in hospice care.<\/p>\n Batman, whose shows spanned Broadway, off Broadway, Los Angeles, London and beyond, collaborated for more than two decades with his producing partner, Bruce Robert Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n Together, they produced \u201cGood Night and Good Luck,\u201d \u201cJohn Proctor is the Villain\u201d and \u201cThe Roommate.\u201d<\/p>\n Batman and Harris won the Tony for best revival of a musical in 2013 for \u201cPippin.\u201d<\/p>\n Sadie Sink on the opening night of “John Proctor is the Villain” in April.<\/p>\n The win arrived just a year after another Broadway victory for a show Batman and Harris produced.<\/p>\n In 2012, \u201cClybourne Park\u201d won the Tony for best play. Playwright Bruce Norris also won the Pulitzer Prize for the play.<\/p>\n Other Tony-nominated shows Batman produced include \u201cNew York, New York\u201d (2023); \u201cGary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus\u201d (2019); \u201cCarousel\u201d (2018); \u201cNatasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812\u2033 (2017); \u201cPresent Laughter\u201d (2017); \u201cOn the Town\u201d (2015); \u201cYou Can\u2019t Take it With You\u201d (2015); \u201cNice Work if You Can Get It\u201d (2012); and \u201cThe Scottsboro Boys\u201d (2011).<\/p>\n Thank you for reading.
