\n\tSpike Lee<\/a> made headlines at Cannes this year when premiering his new film Highest 2 Lowest<\/a><\/em> and announcing that it would likely be his last team-up with frequent collaborator Denzel Washington<\/a>. <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI think this is it \u2014 five,\u201d Lee told reporters<\/a> of his and Washington\u2019s number of films together. \u201cHe\u2019s been talking about retirement<\/a>, even though he\u2019s just done another deal. Five films together, they stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe pair have united for Inside Man<\/em>, Mo\u2019 Better Blues<\/em>,\u00a0Malcolm X,\u00a0He Got Game<\/em> and now Highest 2 Lowest<\/a><\/em>, but at the new film\u2019s New York premiere on Monday, Lee walked back those previous comments and kept the door open for more projects with Washington. <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI said that before, but I got my mind right,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m open to work with Denzel Washington and this not be the last film of the dynamic duo, D and Lee.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHighest 2 Lowest <\/em>is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa\u2019s 1963 film\u00a0High and Low<\/em> and sees a powerful music mogul (Washington) targeted by a ransom plot and put in a life-or-death moral dilemma. A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Elijah Wright, Wendell Pierce and Ice Spice also appear in the film<\/a>. <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI became a student of Akira Kurosawa at NYU\u2019s graduate film school \u2014 that\u2019s where I saw Rashomon<\/em>, that\u2019s where I saw many of Samurai films, that\u2019s where I saw High and Low<\/em>,\u201d Lee recalled, noting that Washington \u201chad gotten the property and he sent it to me; he said, \u2018Spike read the script. If you like, let\u2019s go.\u2019 I read it right away, called him up, I think the next day and said, \u2018Let\u2019s go.\u2019 It happened like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
