Weapons director Zach Cregger<\/a> has revealed the true personal story of a close friend\u2019s death, which inspired his word-of-mouth hit horror film<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The movie, starring Josh Brolin<\/a>, Julia Garner<\/a>, Benedict Wong and Alden Ehrenreich, follows the mystery of 17 children who disappear <\/a>in the middle of the night in a small town in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

But despite the fictional story following a fantastical narrative, Cregger said it is \u201can autobiographical movie in a lot of ways\u201d about the death of his best friend and collaborator Trevor Moore in a tragic accident in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was working on post-production on Barbarian when my best friend died very suddenly in a really awful accident,\u201d he told Rolling Stone. <\/a><\/p>\n

He admitted that processing his grief through creativity could be considered a clich\u00e9 in some ways, but nevertheless he believed the output is powerful.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, like the rest of the world, I don\u2019t want to watch another horror movie about grief,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat whole horror-as-a-metaphor-for-grief is so f***ing played out. I shouldn\u2019t even be talking about this, but I can\u2019t help myself. I don\u2019t care if anybody gets any of that when they watch it. I want them to have fun. If the story rips, none of that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

He insisted: \u201cBut I wanted to do something honest. And I found that as I kept writing, and the more I identified with all of the people I was writing about, the more this became something like an honest diary of my inner sh*t.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny, I was talking to [Midsommar director] Ari Aster about this, and was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know about the personal stuff.\u2019 And he was like, \u2018The personal stuff is what makes this work. Don\u2019t be ashamed of it!\u2019 Hearing him say that\u2026 it\u2019s part of the DNA of Weapons. The town is dealing with a loss. And so was I. It was the biggest direct hit I\u2019d ever taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cregger\u2019s best friend died in 2021 and his grief inspired the process behind his new hit film \u2018Weapons\u2019 (AP)<\/p>\n

Cregger and Moore were introduced by mutual friends while studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York. They went on to found sketch group The Whitest Kids U\u2019Know, which ran for five seasons between 2007 and 2011.<\/p>\n

The director wrote the film in a \u201cblitz of writing\u201d lasting two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just started, sentence one: \u2018This is a true story. Half of my hometown, all of these kids bailed.\u2019 You know, I\u2019m writing this cold open, and I don\u2019t know where the kids went. I\u2019m just like, \u2018OK, let\u2019s go. Let\u2019s see if I can solve this. What happened? Who were they? What was left behind? What does it feel like?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cWeapons was like me vomiting. And who doesn\u2019t want to get a babysitter and go to the movie theater and spend 120 bucks to watch someone vomit?\u201d<\/p>\n
