The 2025 fall movie season<\/a> is shaping up to be an embarrassment of riches for fans of Josh and Benny Safdie. The filmmaking duo went their separate creative ways after \u201cUncut Gems,\u201d each choosing to embark on their own ambitious project\u2026 which just means there are twice as many Safdie movies to enjoy this fall. Benny Safdie\u2019s Dwayne Johnson-led MMA drama \u201cThe Smashing Machine\u201d<\/a> is up first, and then cinephiles will receive a holiday gift in the form of Josh Safdie\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d which hits theaters on Christmas Day and just dropped its first trailer.<\/p>\n The film stars Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet as fictional table tennis star Marty Mauser in what has been characterized as an adventure film in the vein of \u201cCatch Me If You Can.\u201d Safdie and co-writer Ronald Bronstein (who also co-wrote and co-edited \u201cGood Time\u201d and \u201cUncut Gems\u201d) took inspiration from the life of real ping pong pro Marty Reisman, though \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d is a fictionalized original story. Reisman\u2019s life was examined in the 2014 documentary \u201cFact or Fiction: The Life and Times of a Ping Pong Hustler,\u201d which examined both his 22 table tennis championships and his early years as a New York con artist.<\/p>\n More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n In true Safdie fashion, \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d features an eclectic mix of Hollywood A-listers and non-actors from other lines of work. In addition to Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> (who appears in her first on-screen film role since 2019\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d) the cast includes Fran Drescher, Abel Ferrara (AKA The Weeknd), Tyler, the Creator, \u201cShark Tank\u201d star and billionaire Kevin O\u2019Leary, magician Pen Jillette, Odessa A\u2019zion, Sandra Bernhard, and French highwire daredevil Philippe Petit.<\/p>\n \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d was shot by \u201cEddington\u201d and \u201cUncut Gems\u201d cinematographer Darius Khondji, who recently said that he expects the film to be \u201cbox office dynamite\u201d despite the fact that \u201cthe shooting was so hard and crazy.\u201d He also praised Chalamet\u2019s dedication to training with ping pong champions to prepare for the film\u2019s athletic sequences.<\/p>\n \u201cHe wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting,\u201d Khondji said of Chalamet during an appearance at the Doha Film Institute (via Variety<\/a>). \u201cBecause you can do anything, any camera tricks you want, but you need to have a core.\u201d<\/p>\n An A24 release, \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d opens in theaters on December 25.
