The entertainment news show \u201cExtra\u201d is getting a new host in its old age.<\/p>\n
Derek Hough, best known as a dance pro and now judge on \u201cDancing With the Stars,\u201d will replace Billy Bush as lead anchor of the syndicated series, which is going into its 32nd season in September.<\/p>\n
In a statement to The Times on Wednesday, Hough expressed his excitement and acknowledged the opportunities the ballroom has created for him. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m stepping into an exciting new spotlight as the host of \u2018Extra,\u2019\u201d Hough said. \u201cI\u2019m truly looking forward to collaborating with this incredible team, diving into this next creative chapter, and connecting with fans and audiences in a whole new way.\u201d<\/p>\n
In May, Bush announced on his \u201cHot Mics\u201d podcast that he would not return as host<\/a> of \u201cExtra\u201d after serving as its emcee since 2019. The former \u201cAccess Hollywood\u201d correspondent and co-anchor, who was entangled in a hot mic controversy<\/a> with then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, wants to focus on his own show. <\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Extra\u2019 is culturally iconic,\u201d Bush said in May. \u201cIf I had a dollar for every time someone hollered \u2018Extra Extra\u2019 to me in the airport or something, I\u2019d buy Warner Bros.\u201d<\/p>\n Hough is an Emmy Award-winning dancer and choreographer. As an actor, he has appeared in the ABC series \u201cNashville\u201d and the Disney+ series \u201cHigh School Musical: The Musical.\u201d He has been a \u201cDWTS\u201d judge since Season 29, appearing alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.<\/p>\n \u201cDerek has not only dominated the world of dance \u2014 he\u2019s become a beloved household name who has won America\u2019s hearts with his talent, charisma and boundless creativity,\u201d \u201cExtra\u201d executive producer Jeremy Spiegel said Wednesday in a statement to The Times.<\/p>\n \u201cI am excited to work closely with Derek as he brings his electrifying energy and fresh perspective to \u2018Extra,\u2019\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The new season of \u201cExtra\u201d will premiere on Sept. 8 on Fox.
