Beat the heat with a sweet and chilled treat on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the annual birthday block party in front of Leopold’s Ice Cream, which have been giving Savannahians the scoop since 1919. Lt. Col. John A. White will be the guest of honor to cut the cake at 2 p.m. White is just a wee bit younger at 101 than the ice cream parlor. A Savannah native, White was the first African American to be hired as a law enforcement officer in the state of Georgia and one of the Original Nine at the Savannah Police Department.<\/p>\n

The Naked Dog will be on hand to dish out bites, and Oliver Bentley’s will have a set up for dogs to chill.<\/p>\n
