Despite his status as a pop culture icon for close to 50 years now, \u2018Weird Al\u2019 Yankovic<\/a> has claimed he\u2019s not terribly bothered about being overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking to Vulture<\/em><\/a>, Yankovic was asked to share his pitch to the Rock Hall to \u201cdo the right thing and induct\u201d him, though the musical parodist seemed somewhat resigned to never being inducted when he replied, \u201cThe Rock Hall is going to do what they\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re obviously expanding the boundaries<\/a> of what constitutes rock and roll when they make their decisions,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf they\u2019re going to ever pick a comedic entry, I\u2019d like to think I\u2019d be considered for that. If they pick another accordion-playing parody writer ahead of me, I\u2019d be upset.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t lose any sleep over having not been nominated. Right now, there aren\u2019t millions of people saying, \u2018Why isn\u2019t he in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?\u2019 And I\u2019d prefer that to having millions of people saying, \u2018Who let that jerk in there?’\u201d<\/p>\n Despite Yankovic having been eligible for inclusion into the Rock Hall since 2005, he\u2019s yet to be nominated on any annual ballot. However, chairman John Sykes did admit<\/a> in December that the influential musical satirist has \u201ccome up in conversations\u201d over the years.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a genius,\u201d Sykes explained. \u201cHe has made brilliant versions of the songs, but I\u2019ll be honest: He\u2019s never made it close to the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n Comedian John Mulaney shared his thoughts<\/a> on Yankovic\u2019s absence from the Rock Hall earlier this year, reflecting on how the likes of Chubby Checker are to be inducted this year, given his debut single \u201cThe Class\u201d has been classified as a novelty song.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m a big proponent of novelty music,\u201d Mulaney admitted. \u201cI\u2019m a big proponent of \u2018Weird Al\u2019 getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is one step closer, though I don\u2019t know why they need to be led via steps. \u2018Weird Al\u2019 brought more people to music than is recognized at all.<\/p>\n \u201cI will, in fact, greatly devalue my coolness by saying [when I was young], it wasn\u2019t until \u2018Smells Like Nirvana\u2019 defanged \u2018Smells Like Teen Spirit\u2019 that I could enjoy \u2018Smells Like Teen Spirit,\u2019\u201d Mulaney added. \u201cIt was scary at first. It just was like, \u2018I\u2019m pretty happy, I\u2019m a kid.\u2019 I needed a way in. And after you laugh at \u2018Smells Like Nirvana,\u2019 you go, \u2018Oh, this is a really good song.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n This year\u2019s Rock Hall inductees<\/a> include the likes of The White Stripes, Outkast, Soundgarden, Bad Company, Cyndi Lauper, and more.<\/p>\n The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction will be live on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
