Photo: Christopher Morley<\/em><\/p>\n Billy Strings has turned over the Apple Music Nashville Sessions <\/em>EP, new renditions of songs that initially appeared on his latest studio output, 2024\u2019s Highway Prayers<\/em>. The four-song set features assistance from jazz-informed keysman Cory Henry, cellist Nat Smith, backbeat Jamie Dick, fiddler Jason Carter, and mandolin virtuoso Sam Bash, on select numbers, and arrived with an official in-studio video of \u201cGild The Lily.\u201d Hours after delivering the batch, Strings took the stage in Fargo, N.D., where he revived classic material from the band\u2019s deep catalog of covers.<\/p>\n Apple Music Nashville Sessions <\/em>stays true to Billy Strings\u2019 core lineup with Billy Failing (banjo\/vocals), Alex Hargreaves (fiddle), Royal Masat (bass\/vocals, and Jarrod Walker (mandolin\/vocals) and their bandleader returning to tracks like \u201cBe Your Man,\u201d \u201cLeaning on a Travelin\u2019 Song,\u201d \u201cMalfunction Junction\u201d and \u201cGild The Lily,\u201d which make up the full run of EP material, expanded from its original form.\u00a0<\/p>\n Tuesday\u2019s surprise drop coincides with the band\u2019s latest live appearance at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. Where a solo Strings stepped out and opened the night with the calculated riffs of \u201cGuitar Peace,\u201d merged with a tease of Dave Alvin\u2019s \u201cBarn Burnin\u2019,\u201d before the rest of the band turned up for Pink Floyd\u2019s \u201cFearless.\u201d He segmented the next part of the set into a series of originals, including Apple Music Nashville Sessions, <\/em>the Highway Prayers<\/em> originator, \u201cGild The Lily,\u201d followed by another track off the 2024 release, \u201cEscanaba.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Blaze Foley\u2019s \u201cCold, Cold World\u201d broke the pattern, before another pull from their latest studio effort, \u201cGone A Long Time.\u201d The band delivered the Renewal<\/em> staple \u201cLove and Regret\u201d before pairing Bill Emerson\u2019s \u201cHome of the Red Fox\u201d and their own, \u201cKnow It All.\u201d Set one served \u201cWatch It Fall\u201d fused with Hot Rize\u2019s \u201cNellie Kane,\u201d before breaking at the halfway mark. For their return, the band gathered around a single mic to reprise the old-timey feeling of the bluegrass tradition on Bill Monroe\u2019s \u201cClose By,\u201d traditional \u201cEast Virginia Blues,\u201d played for the first time since August 23, 2024, and \u201cFreedom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Stepping back from the single mic and resuming their spots, Strings picked up the clawhammer banjo, and Failing also sought out the instrument for their \u201cDos Banjos\u201d showdown. The neighboring-state-named \u201cWest Dakota Rose\u201d kicked off a three-part sequence, \u201cShow Me the Door,\u201d \u201cMust Be Seven,\u201d and traditional \u201cLittle Maggie.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0After another batch of originals, the group dusted off Hartford\u2019s \u201cThe Tall Tall Grass\u201d for the first time since August 24, 2023, ending a 146-show gap in performance.
