I’d written the songs and everything, and then of course the pandemic came along,” says Parmenter, 57, who founded Discipline in 1987, with its debut album, “Chaos Out of Order,” coming out the following year. Some computer issues caused further delays, Parmenter says, and then a new day job forced longtime drummer Paul Dzendzel to drop out of the group.

Fortunately for the latter, Parmenter didn’t have to look far for a replacement. His 20-year-old son, Henry, who’s studying at Columbia College in Chicago, stepped into the role, joining original bassist Mathew Kennedy and Chris Herin, lead guitarist since 2015. “He’s a gifted drummer, so he was able to step in and help us finish the record,” the elder Parmenter notes.

Recorded primarily at Swindlehurst, his home studio in southeastern Michigan, and mixed by longtime Rush cohort Terry Brown, “Breadcrumbs” is a characteristically ambitious collection of five songs, all intricately arranged and with a title track stretching to nearly 17 minutes. The song “Keep the Change,” meanwhile, dates back 30 years and was included at the request of Hugh Syme, another Rush collaborator, who did the art direction and design for the album.

In addition to this weekend’s release show at the Loving Touch in Ferndale, Discipline will promote “Breadcrumbs” at the 25th anniversary of the Summer’s End festival in Wales later this month, and also at the ProgStock festival in New Jersey in October.

“There used to be a song in the ’80s (by Alphaville) called ‘We’re Big in Japan,’ and that’s a little like the way it feels here,” notes Parmenter, who also plays violin in the Kate Hinote Trio and has begun studying jazz piano. “We’re not big anywhere because prog is this really small subset of everything. But having said that, we’re fortunate we get to play a few festivals here and there, and there are people who like this kind of music and what we do with it. That keeps us going.”

Discipline celebrates the release of its new album, “Breadcrumbs,” on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Loving Touch, 22634 Woodward Ave., Ferndale.
