Thirty years later, Clueless<\/a> still serves as one of the funniest coming-of-age comedies<\/a>. Based on Jane Austen\u2019s Emma, a rich Beverly Hills teen believes she knows how to perform \u201cgood deeds\u201d until she receives a dose of reality. Believe it or not, Alicia Silverstone<\/a> got real on why studios initially rejected the comedy classic.<\/p>\n There are so many reasons why Clueless has reached pop culture status today. It introduced us to \u201990s Valley Girl slang like \u201cAs If!\u201d and \u201cWhatever!\u201d You can\u2019t forget about the characters\u2019 many plaid ensembles and what not to do when learning to drive a car.<\/p>\n Most importantly, the \u201990s flick was the start of many up-and-coming stars\u2019 careers, like Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd<\/a>, Donald Faison<\/a>, Breckin Meyer<\/a>, and more. They would all go off to continue making names for themselves in many movies and TV shows that showed off their comedy chops.<\/p>\n In Entertainment Weekly\u2019s \u201990s Issue<\/a>, Alicia Silverstone revealed that studios originally didn\u2019t think Clueless was a good idea, and here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n \u201cAmy [Heckerling] had to fight to get this made. All the studios said, \u2018We\u2019re not making a movie with a young girl as the lead. It\u2019s going to fail.’\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Clueless went on to gross $88 million on a $12 million budget and achieved further success in home video sales. It also followed a spinoff TV show, a book series, and is about to get the reboot TV series treatment for Peacock<\/a>, with Silverstone reprising her iconic role.<\/p>\n Alicia Silverstone continued to say what she felt made Clueless the success that it is now:<\/p>\n \u201cI really think that it\u2019s magic in a bottle,\u201d said Silverstone. \u201cYou don\u2019t get that often, and none of us could have thought that that was going to happen. But I think it was the combination of Mona [May]\u2019s costume design, Amy\u2019s brilliant writing and directing, and I think that it\u2019s funny and charming. And Jane Austen\u2019s Emma isn\u2019t too shabby either, as a starting off point. I think Amy really had her finger on the pulse, and had a beautiful way of capturing moments in time.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a good thing Paramount Pictures<\/a> gave Clueless a chance, or we wouldn\u2019t have one of the most quotable teen comedies of all time.
