As the original \u201cHome Alone\u201d movie gears up to celebrate its 35th anniversary this November, director Chris Columbus is speaking out against remaking or rebooting his classic Christmas comedy. Chatting with Entertainment Tonight<\/a>, Columbus said a \u201cHome Alone\u201d reboot would be a big mistake. The 1990 classic starred Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, an 8-year old boy who must fend off a pair of robbers when his family accidentally leaves him home during Christmas vacation.<\/p>\n \u201cI think\u00a0\u2018Home Alone\u2019\u00a0really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can\u2019t really recapture that,\u201d Columbus said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n The 1990 movie was a box office blockbuster with $476 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1990. Columbus returned for the 1992 sequel \u201cHome Alone 2: Lost in New York,\u201d which grossed less but still managed to become the year\u2019s third top grosser with $359 million worldwide. The two movies made Culkin a child actor sensation. He recently appeared on \u201cHot Ones\u201d and explained his reasoning <\/a>for why the sequel is better than the original.<\/p>\n \u201cI got paid more. I think I own 5% of the net,\u201d Culkin said about the sequel. \u201cAnd also 15% of the merchandising. So, if you buy a Talkboy I\u2019m like yeah, I\u2019ll take 15% of that. Thank you very much. By the way, buy a Talkboy this Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n Disney did try to reboot \u201cHome Alone\u201d in 2021 with the Disney+ exclusive movie \u201cHome Sweet Home Alone,\u201d starring young \u201cJojo Rabbit\u201d breakout\u00a0Archie Yates opposite Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney and Kenan Thompson. Dan Mazer (\u201cDirty Grandpa\u201d) directed the the reboot, which followed the plot of the original by starring Yates as a resourceful kid who gets left behind while his family is in Japan for the holidays.\u00a0Reviews were not kind to the remake, perhaps proving Columbus\u2019 point right.<\/p>\n Variety called the reboot \u201csluggish and stale\u201d in its review<\/a>, adding: \u201c\u2018Home Sweet Home Alone\u2019 takes everything audiences loved about the Chris Columbus-directed, John Hughes-penned original and turns it around on them\u2026 Mean-spirited, downright sloppy and awkwardly unfunny, this rote feature reboot lacks holiday cheer.\u201d<\/p>\n Best of Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter<\/a>.
