In the meantime, though, here\u2019s the timeline of the drama so far\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n Ethel Cain\u2019s rise over the past few years has earned her many comparisons to Lana Del Rey, due to the similarities in their brooding, melancholy sound and exploration of themes like love in small-town America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to one <\/span>social media user<\/span><\/a>, Ethel even once cited Lana as one of her favourite musical artists on her DeviantArt profile from 2015. <\/span>She also uploaded a cover of Lana\u2019s breakthrough hit Born To Die back in 2017, but that seems to have been scrubbed from the internet <\/span>with the exception of fan reposts<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n In another universe, Ethel really could have been a perfect opening act at one of Lana\u2019s concerts.<\/span><\/p>\n However, it seems that Ethel eventually began to grow tired of the comparison as her own profile grew and she became a revered artist in her own right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In 2022, the American Teenager singer told <\/span>i-D<\/span><\/a>.: \u201cI love Lana and I love her music but there\u2019s a hundred other things at play here. If that\u2019s an entry way for a review, that\u2019s fine. But sometimes people arrive at Lana Del Rey and stop at Lana Del Rey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI called [the comparison] lazy writing because it\u2019s lazy for me and her. I think it\u2019s kind of a detriment to the expansive work of two female artists to just reduce them to being similar to each other.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ethel has also made some <\/span>controversial posts<\/span><\/a> about her former muse. When one social media user posted \u201cLana Del Rey walked so Ethel Cain could run\u201d, the American Teenager singer responded by writing: \u201cI pushed her over when I ran past\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Up until this week, there hasn\u2019t <\/span>really<\/span> been any public beef suggesting an actual falling-out between the pair. But that all changed when Lana posted a snippet on <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> of herself listening to a track from her <\/span>long-awaited<\/span><\/a> new album in a car.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Fans\u2019 ears quickly pricked up when they heard the first line: \u201cEthel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it\u2019s cute re-enacting my Chicago post.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n While the cryptic lyric might not make much sense on first listen, the personal lore in both artists\u2019 worlds goes deep, and it didn\u2019t take long for fans to decipher what Lana might have been hinting at.<\/p>\n Back in 2022, Lana posted a photo with musician Jack Donoghue from the band Salem \u2013 who she was reportedly dating at the time \u2013 posing outside Chicago\u2019s Cook County Jail.<\/p>\n Around the same time, Ethel shared her own picture with Jack on X with the caption \u201cok wait my turn\u201d before deleting it. This is made a little more awkward due to <\/span>rumours<\/span><\/a> that they have also been <\/span>romantically<\/span><\/a>involved<\/span><\/a>, though this has not been confirmed by either party.<\/span><\/p>\n In her recent teaser, Lana was also heard singing: \u201cThe most famous girl at the Waffle House. I don\u2019t regret it. The most famous girl at the Waffle House.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This seems to be a reference to a 2022 New York Times profile of Ethel titled <\/span>The Most Famous Girl At The Waffle House<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Lana also has her own connection to the US breakfast restaurant chain, having gone viral when pictures of her in the uniform <\/span>picking up a shift there (seemingly just for vibes)<\/span><\/a> emerged one fateful day back in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n Given her own unlikely relationship with the chain, fans are wondering whether \u201cthe most famous girl at the Waffle House\u201d is a title that Lana thinks should go to her.<\/p>\n After all, she did once declare herself to be \u201cthe most famous woman you know on the iPad\u201d on the closing track of her Norman Fucking Rockwell album.<\/p>\n Hours after Lana shared her snippet, Ethel appeared to address the supposed feud by claiming on her Instagram story: \u201cUpdate: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Crush singer is renowned for being \u201cchronically online\u201d, so whether or not this was just a joke about the drama remains to be seen, but it wouldn\u2019t be at all surprising given Lana\u2019s history of <\/span>public call-outs<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>social media controversy<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n What we do know however, is that they certainly don\u2019t follow each other right now.<\/span><\/p>\n Lana later addressed the drama in more detail, explaining where her personal issues with the Nettles singer stem from.<\/span><\/p>\n In a since-deleted Instagram comment on a post alluding to the drama, Lana claimed: <\/span>\u201cI didn\u2019t know who Ethel was until a few years ago \u2013 when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThen when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n celebrity.land UK has contacted Ethel Cain\u2019s team for comment.<\/span><\/p>\nCritics have been comparing Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey for some time now<\/strong><\/h2>\n
