Quick \u2014 name the five best costume designers in television. OK, the three best. Still can\u2019t get there? We\u2019re not surprised. There\u2019s arguably only one costume designer who\u2019s changed the visual language of television in the last quarter-century and become a household name in the process: Patricia Field.<\/p>\n
Known for her work on Sex and the City \u2014 but boasting other credits such as Ugly Betty and Emily in Paris \u2014 Field concocts outfits that mix colours and textures, as well as couture and bargain fashion, with wild abandon. She\u2019s also won two Emmys and earned an Oscar nomination for her work on The Devil Wears Prada.<\/p>\n
A documentary that spotlights her \u2014 titled Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field \u2014 is making its Canadian broadcast debut on Aug. 22. Airing on Super Channel Fuse, it originally premi\u00e8red at the 2023 Tribeca Festival and had a limited theatrical release. (A memoir titled Pat in the City also came out in 2023.)<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a great time on Happy Clothes, the documentary I worked on with the director Michael Selditch,\u201d Field told The New York Times last September. \u201cPart of the fun was being filmed tooling around Brooklyn in my T-Bird with the top down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, there\u2019s more to the film than that. There\u2019s the story of how she opened a clothing store in 1960s New York City, catering to underground culture. There are interviews with Kim Cattrall, Lily Collins, Sarah Jessica Parker, Darren Star and Vanessa Williams, among others. And there are her inspirations \u2014 both professional and personal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe women in my family, my aunts, my grandmother \u2014 they were achievers,\u201d Field told The New York Times. \u201cThey inspired me. They taught me: Do what you like and what you\u2019re good at, and you\u2019ll make things happen. I\u2019ve always liked fashion, so working in fashion was easy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Field, 84, is also excited by the exuberance of youth. Speaking last May on the CBC radio show Q with Tom Power, she explained why it has fuelled her creativity over the decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people love imagination,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir brains are open. They haven\u2019t solidified their brain matter yet and I love working with young people for that reason, because even though I may not be young, my brain is still open, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the title of the documentary \u2014 Happy Clothes \u2014 Field explained that the term refers to garments that both make you feel good and represent your authentic self.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that\u2019s what\u2019s important,\u201d she said. \u201cHow you express yourself in the way you present yourself \u2014 and you don\u2019t present yourself by the dictates of a magazine \u2026 it has to come from you.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re inside yourself. You express yourself like nobody else does.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
