The James Gunn blockbuster start to the new DC Universe (DCU) is still playing on well over 2,000 screens domestically and continues to perform with solid longevity, but the decision was made to put it on PVOD after just a month and change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are a lot of pieces worth picking apart with the PVOD release schedule of <em>Superman<\/em>, and I\u2019ll get my beak sharpened in just a bit. I love the theatrical experience (even when <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/articles\/toxic-relationship-movie-theaters-013749485.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:it doesn\u2019t love me back;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">it doesn\u2019t love me back<\/a>) but I\u2019m at a point in my life where there are plenty of new release films I\u2019d prefer to watch in the comfort of my own home. While that instant gratification hasn\u2019t become a part of the consumer landscape, the release window for studio films has become something of a crap shoot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Many viewers are fine waiting for a movie to become available for home viewing either as a digital rental\/purchase or when it gets added to whatever <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/streaming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:streaming;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">streaming<\/a> service\u2019s catalog they subscribe to. The problem is that those schedules change from movie to movie, so it can be difficult as a consumer to keep up or even care about keeping track of a particular movie\u2019s eventual home availability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What does this specifically have to do with <em>Superman<\/em>? It\u2019s certainly a surprise to see it available at home relatively quickly while it\u2019s still doing solid business in theaters. Managing some brand consistency and \u201cflow\u201d (yuck) seems to be a part of the strategy with moving <em>Superman<\/em> to home video so fast. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the best option available for the movie\u2019s continued success in theaters, but I can see the game being played.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The DCU brand needs to remain ever-present in the minds of the populace and <em>Superman<\/em> winding down means the next thing needs to wind up. <em>Superman<\/em> might be a standalone success but its power position is immediately diminished once the next thing needs that marketing space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I\u2019m willing to bet <em>Superman<\/em> will do very well on PVOD for the coming future before getting bumped down to regular prices. It\u2019s a popular film and continues to prove so with a steady stream of showings at the movie theater.
