Apparently, it\u2019s the perfect time to stop. Apparently, neither of these people care about my mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I have spent my entire adult life invested in Carrie Bradshaw. I viewed every experience I\u2019ve had in New York through the prism of how she and her friends experienced it. I found joy in every moment here because of her, and in every aggravation cursed her name. There\u2019s not a cosmo big enough to mourn. The fact that typing \u201cbig\u201d gave me PTSD to \u201cBig\u201d is testament to that. But I want to give credit to <i>And Just Like That<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was infuriating. It was messy. It was embarrassing. And because of all those things, very real. Those three adjectives pretty much define my experience of getting older.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"Sarah Jessica Parker in \u201cSex and the City.\u201d \/ HBO\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/a7dS_eu_IWGPleX3n1DrBQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTc2ODtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/thedailybeast.com\/ea9fa82f2145f6a164f7e9be2b347766\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p>Sarah Jessica Parker in \u201cSex and the City.\u201d \/ HBO<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It had its annoyances; RIP Che Diaz, but also thank you for my <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/obsessed\/and-just-like-thats-che-diaz-is-the-worst-character-on-tv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:most read story ever;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">most read story ever<\/a> at the Daily Beast. But even in its stupidness, the show somehow resonated with me. <i>And Just Like That\u2026 <\/i>we had the singular example of one of the thousands of revivals and sequels that dared to actually interrogate what its characters might be like in a modern world, and not just do fan service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The lack of fan service, I think, is a huge sticking point with the backlash to <i>And Just Like That<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There was so much reaction to \u201cMiranda would never behave this way\u201d (chaotic lesbian), and \u201cCharlotte is being rewritten to appease the wokes\u201d (has a gender questioning child). Can I counter with\u2026 not a single one of my lifelong friends, especially the ones I connected with in adulthood, has even a trace of the same personality as when I met them?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They are all so different from when we met\u2014and, I\u2019d like to think, so am I\u2014that it is as if they had a full body transplant. That\u2019s the challenge of growing older. Changing yourself as your \u201cpeople\u201d are also changing, and figuring out how you can still be in each other\u2019s lives and find perspective on each others\u2019 new challenges as you evolve. That\u2019s actually what I think <i>And Just Like That <\/i>did beautifully, and also what made it so hard to watch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s also why I\u2019m so appreciative of Carrie Bradshaw and particularly Sarah Jessica Parker\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There is no more charming celebrity than SJP. I\u2019ve witnessed it in person. There is also, for all the glamour and fabulousness and wealth, no celebrity of that stature who has her feet\u2014or, I guess, stilettos\u2014firmly planted down on earth. But while that maelstrom of qualities assigned to her swirled around her, she did have those feet on the ground. In the most literal way possible\u2014typing her thoughts out on a laptop while she narrated them\u2014she channeled our inner monologue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I look back on my 27 years of finding myself and losing myself. Of being in that kind of all-consuming, stupid love. Of going through very grown-up heartbreak. Of asserting my worth, and losing my worth\u2014and finding it again. Of seeing my friends be spectacular, and seeing them be so disappointing\u2014and being at the restaurant with some wine to talk through both. Of trying to figure out who I am alone, but also having the honor of having friends and family to distract me from that painful journey. With less fashion and way fewer shoes, it\u2019s not\u2026 that unlike Carrie Bradshaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s become a meme at this point, but I still think it\u2019s transgressive. \u201cI couldn\u2019t help but wonder\u2026\u201d Carrie is putting a wrecking ball through a societal wall, her boundless and endlessly endearing curiosity being so much that she can\u2019t help but ask the questions about life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The answers are not always what you want, and sometimes don\u2019t even exist. In the case of <i>And Just Like That<\/i>, they may be infuriating. But to even just ask the question\u2026 the fact that I couldn\u2019t figure out which punctuation to put on the end of that sentence speaks volumes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>You Can Jive<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I woke up this morning, and weirdly there is sun coming through my windows where there has never been light. A bird chirped; there has never been a bird. I started answering emails and 30 minutes later realized I wasn\u2019t wearing my glasses; I didn\u2019t need them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">My vision was clear. The sunlight was beaming. The bagel I ordered arrived, for the first time, with the exact specifications I asked for. I was suddenly three inches taller and lost the 20 pounds I\u2019ve been struggling to lose. In case you forget, I encourage you to walk down 7th Avenue between 51st and 50th Street, where that exact quote is plastered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">My enthusiasm for this ABBA jukebox musical is utter silliness. Or so I thought until I was at the opening (!!!) this week. The exuberance that came out of the crowd was a level that\u2014this is so corny\u2014really moved me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Everything right now is\u2026 hard. However you feel politically, there\u2019s no denying that just existing during this tension is just plain hard. You know what\u2019s not hard? Losing your s&#8211;t while some diva belts out \u201cThe Winner Takes It All.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There\u2019s a high level of talent and craft that goes into pulling off <i>Mamma Mia!<\/i> to make it Broadway-worthy and not just \u201cThis Production Is Brought to You by Kevin While He\u2019s Vacuuming on a Sunday.\u201d But there is something about the show and its joy that is so accessible, to the point of being almost transactional. Need some joy? Buy a ticket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I had the time of my life at this opening. But I also appreciate what it means to be able to see something that lifts you up\u2014and that you can guarantee will do that\u2014when you\u2019re down.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>The True Life of a Showgirl<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I have been delighted by every single one of <i>The Life of a Showgirl<\/i> memes that have popped up since Taylor Swift announced it as the title of her upcoming twelfth album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Who knew <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/people-mocking-taylor-swift-album-170553678.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:how many pop culture references;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">how many pop culture references<\/a> could fit perfectly into an assignment of \u201cmake a meme about a showgirl\u201d?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But what I\u2019m most appreciative of is that the album announcement found an occasion to bring back the absolutely absurd and, as such, positively genius video that comedians Kate Berlant and John Early produced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is an exact replica, frame-by-frame of the iconic\/notorious dance rehearsal scene from the movie <i>Showgirls<\/i>, starring Elizabeth Berkley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There\u2019s inherent absurdity in the recreation; Early plays Berkley\u2019s character, wearing the same costume and a convincing wig. But the meticulousness of it\u2014every gesture and body position is exact\u2014makes you realize that <i>Showgirls<\/i> actually was more of a cinematic triumph than its legendary \u201cflop\u201d gives it credit for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Every few months this video comes across my social media timeline. I will watch it straight through every time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>Why Is Everything Being Ruined?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The finest night of entertainment every year is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/opinion-trump-kennedy-center-honors-220449854.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Kennedy Center Honors;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">the Kennedy Center Honors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As it had been, a refined institution selected a roster of artists who were not just brilliant, but their work and their presence in our lives shepherded us through shifts in culture, movements, and moments. To honor them, some of the most talented people who benefited from their work delivered show-stopping homages. But at least now we\u2019ll get to see Donald Trump ramble about grass and then introduce Kiss\u2014who I recall <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/trump-kennedy-center-honorees-unmasked-212224329.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:actually hate him;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">actually hate him<\/a>, too. Great.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>An Actual Tragedy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now even the new <i>Shrek <\/i>is being delayed?
