Denzel Washington may be a two-time Oscar winner and one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, but he\u2019s continuing to share that he\u2019s not overly concerned with other people\u2019s opinions.<\/p>\n
Just days after making headlines for saying he\u2019s \u201cnot that interested in Oscars,\u201d the Highest 2 Lowest<\/a><\/em> star has indicated that he doesn\u2019t spend time worrying about getting \u201ccanceled.\u201d<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n When Washington, alongside director and frequent collaborator Spike Lee, was asked, in a video interview with Complex News<\/em><\/a> if he was concerned about \u201cbeing \u2018canceled,’\u201d<\/a> he replied with a question of his own, \u201cWhat does that mean \u2014 to be canceled?\u201d<\/p>\n When the interviewer, Jillian Hardeman-Webb, said, \u201cit means you lose public support,\u201d Washington said, \u201cwho cares?\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cWhat made public support so important to begin with?\u201d<\/p>\n Hardeman-Webb replied, \u201cfollowers now are currency,\u201d which led Washington to explain what\u2019s important to him.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t care who\u2019s following who,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t lead and follow at the same time, and you can\u2019t follow and lead at the same time. I don\u2019t follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don\u2019t follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain\u2019t working out so well.\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cYou can\u2019t be canceled if you haven\u2019t signed up. Don\u2019t sign up. Don\u2019t get me started. My chest started hurting. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Washington and Lee\u2019s latest collaboration, their fifth overall and first in nearly 20 years, though according to Lee likely not their last<\/a>, the movie Highest 2 Lowest<\/a><\/em>, is in theaters now.<\/p>\n The A24 and Apple film is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa\u2019s High and Low<\/em>, starring Washington as a music mogul who\u2019s targeted in a ransom plot.<\/p>\n Earlier this week, Washington said he doesn\u2019t act \u201cfor Oscars.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t care about that kind of stuff,\u201d he said on Jake\u2019s Takes<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve been at this a long time, and there\u2019s time when I won and shouldn\u2019t have won and then didn\u2019t win and should\u2019ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. \u2026 People ask me, \u2018Where do I keep it?\u2019 Well, next to the other one. I\u2019m not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it.
