In media coverage of the accident, the white pilot, flight attendant and immigration official were recognized by name, but the workers aboard\u2009\u2014\u2009some of whom were in the United States legally on short-term labor contracts through the Bracero Program\u2009\u2014\u2009were referred to only as <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>deportees\u201d and buried in a\u00a0mass grave.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When folk singer, anti-fascist and labor advocate Woody Guthrie read the news, he was inspired to write the lyrics to <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos).\u201d The song assigns symbolic names to the workers and condemns the brutal, precarious conditions that migrants are forced to labor under. Since then, the song has been performed by a\u00a0host of musicians, including Dolly Parton, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and Bob\u00a0Dylan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But no recording of Guthrie performing <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Deportee\u201d has ever been available\u2009\u2014\u2009until\u00a0now.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Shamus Records released <em>Woody At Home<\/em>, a\u00a0collection of <span class=\"numbers\">22<\/span> previously unheard recordings by Guthrie, on August <span class=\"numbers\">14<\/span>. Nora Guthrie, Guthrie\u2019s daughter, and Anna Canoni, his granddaughter and album co-producer, hope the release will introduce a\u00a0new generation of listeners to his\u00a0work.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The rise of fascism in the United States\u2009\u2014\u2009along with new developments in audio software that made the recordings publishable\u2009\u2014\u2009convinced the Guthrie family and their associates that the music scene needed a\u00a0dose of Guthrie\u2019s anti-authoritarian, anti-racist, Nazi-punching\u00a0ethos.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"max-w-article mx-auto px-4 smaller\">\n<h3>HOW TO UN-BAKE A\u00a0CAKE<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The tapes weren\u2019t originally intended for commercial distribution; they were recorded in the living room of Guthrie\u2019s Brooklyn apartment between <span class=\"numbers\">1951<\/span> and <span class=\"numbers\">1952<\/span>, on a\u00a0portable tape recorder given to him by his producer, in hopes of pitching the songs as covers for other\u00a0artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For decades, the tapes were what recording engineer Steve Rosenthal politely refers to as <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>compromised audio.\u201d Guthrie\u2019s guitar drowned out his voice and a\u00a0low humming noise muddied up the entire collection. The guitar, voice and hum were lumped together on a\u00a0monotrack, making it impossible to balance their relative volumes by simply adjusting a\u00a0fader.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But in recent years, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>de-mixing\u201d (AI) software has developed that can isolate and separate the elements of a\u00a0monotrack. Giles Martin, producer of The Beatles\u2019 de-mixed <em>Revolver <\/em>album, explained the new tech to<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/the-beatles-revolver-unheard-archives-sheffield-1234587264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <em>Rolling Ston<\/em>e<\/a>: <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s like you giving me a\u00a0cake, and then me going back to you about an hour later with flour, eggs, sugar, and all the ingredients to that cake, that all haven\u2019t got any cake mix left on\u00a0them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rosenthal used similar software to de-mix <em>Woody At Home<\/em>. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>The hum on all the recordings, we were able to hear it, isolate it and then get rid of it,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The result is <span class=\"numbers\">22<\/span> intimate tracks. Some are new renditions of well-known Guthrie tunes\u2009\u2014\u2009<span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>This Land is Your Land\u201d is the album opener, which Canoni wanted to get <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>out of the way,\u201d so less famous songs could get a\u00a0chance to shine. Other songs had previously existed only in written lyric form, or as covered by other artists, like <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Deportee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Listening to the album is like getting a\u00a0crash course in people\u2019s\u00a0history.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"pb-8 px-4 font-serif text-lg md:text-1xl leading-normal md:leading-normal w-full    z-30 relative\">\n<div class=\" max-w-article mx-auto   flex-col lg:flex-row \">\n<div class=\"md:px-6\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tear The Facists Down\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-3xUPpkxAco?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"font-sans text-sm text-grey py-3\">\n<p>&#8220;Tear the Fascists Down&#8221; by Woody Guthrie<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"max-w-article mx-auto px-4 smaller\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Great Ship\u201d eulogizes the <span class=\"numbers\">1<\/span>,<span class=\"numbers\">195<\/span> lives lost on the Lusitania in <span class=\"numbers\">1915<\/span>. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Buoy Bells from Trenton\u201d tells the story of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaihs.org\/before-the-central-park-five-there-was-the-trenton-six\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Trenton Six<\/a>, a\u00a0group of Black men who were wrongly convicted of killing a\u00a0white shopkeeper in <span class=\"numbers\">1948<\/span>. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve Got to Know\u201d demands answers from the powers that\u00a0be:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Why do your war boats ride on my waters? \/ Why do your death bombs fall from my skies? \/ Why do you burn my farm and my town down? \/ I\u2019ve got to know, friend, I\u2019ve got to\u00a0know!<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When Canoni listens to it, she thinks of the genocide in Gaza, where American-made bombs have been dropping for almost two years. I\u00a0listened to the song the same day that the Trump administration <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trump-justice-department-seeks-one-day-prison-ex-officer-breonna-taylo-rcna219324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requested<\/a> a\u00a0one-day sentence for the officer who fired <span class=\"numbers\">10<\/span> shots through Breonna Taylor\u2019s window, and I\u00a0felt its eerie\u00a0prescience.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Backdoor Bum and the Big Landlord,\u201d two men\u2009\u2014\u2009one of them homeless, the other flush with cash from his many rental properties\u2009\u2014\u2009journey together through the solar system. The last stop on their intergalactic trip is heaven. The former gets in just fine, but the landlord arrives a\u00a0day late, weighed down by his gold coins. When he tries to buy his way in, he is (spoiler alert!) not\u00a0admitted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nora Guthrie suspects her father wrote the song about Fred Trump, Donald Trump\u2019s father. He wasn\u2019t the type to write protest music from the comfort of an ivory tower\u2009\u2014\u2009in fact, he painted the now-famous phrase <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>This Machine Kills Fascists\u201d on his guitar around the time he was shipping out with the Merchant Marine <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/woody-guthrie-correspondence-from-1940-to-1950\/articles-and-essays\/rambling-round-the-life-and-times-of-woody-guthrie\/#:~:text=In%201961%2C%20Marjorie%20moved%20Woody,died%20on%20October%203%2C%201967.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the <span class=\"numbers\">1940<\/span>s<\/a>, on his way to fight fascists during World War\u00a0II.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though the spare instrumentation on the tapes is more a\u00a0matter of circumstance than artistic choice, the lo-fi quality can be heard as a\u00a0feature. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>When they first gave it to me to listen to,\u201d recalled Nora Guthrie, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>I laid down on the couch and turned off the lights. I\u00a0had to become very quiet to listen to it. This world is so freaking noisy. Politics, the news, they scream at you. They don\u2019t tell you what\u2019s going on, they scream at\u00a0you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Anna Canoni, too, found the experience grounding, like a\u00a0guided meditation, or Leftist\u00a0ASMR.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/frontline\/interview\/steve-bannon-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Overwhelm, paralysis<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-steer-conversation-away-jeffrey-epstein\/story?id=123927092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misdirection<\/a> are pillars of the Trumpist media strategy. In this environment, John Berger\u2019s observation that <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>calm is a\u00a0form of resistance\u201d rings especially true. In her <span class=\"numbers\">2023<\/span> book <em>Doppelganger<\/em>, Naomi Klein agrees, explaining that she writes to instill a\u00a0sense of calm in herself and in her readers\u2009\u2014\u2009a calm that is fully compatible with the passion and anger necessary to make change. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Calm is \u2026 the precondition for focus, for the capacity to prioritize,\u201d she writes. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>The goal should never be to put readers into a\u00a0state of shock. It should be to pull them out of\u00a0it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Woody At Home<\/em> has this effect. Quietly, calmly, sometimes backed by his guitar, sometimes a\u00a0capella, Guthrie condemns injustice wherever he finds it, from the immigration system to the landlord-tenant relationship to Hitler\u2019s rise in\u00a0Europe.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>WHO\u2019S GOING TO WRITE THE NEXT\u00a0VERSE?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Woody Guthrie\u2019s songs typically end with a\u00a0lesson or a\u00a0call to action, explained Canoni, so she arranged the album to end the same way. In the final tune, <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>You Better Git Ready,\u201d the\u00a0devil<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">wakes Guthrie up in the middle of the night and tells him that hell is too tame for the Nazis, so they need to be defeated in this\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>You better get ready, brother \/ You better get ready, sister! \/ You better get ready, \/ <span class=\"push-single\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-single\">\u2018<\/span>Cause you know you\u2019ve got to\u00a0fight!<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan drew inspiration directly from Guthrie, and their hosts of imitators and acolytes also partake in the radical musical tradition Guthrie helped\u00a0foster.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Who\u2019s going to write the next verse?\u201d Nora asked. <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Who\u2019s going to write the next song?
