We knew exactly where we were gonna end up from the very beginning,\u201d Gilroy said during a panel at the Television Academy\u2019s inaugural <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/televerse-festival\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Televerse Festival;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Televerse Festival<\/a> in Los Angeles on Saturday. \u201cI find that liberating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>More from Gold Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gilroy was joined onstage by his brothers, <strong>Dan Gilroy<\/strong> and <strong>John Gilroy<\/strong>, who served as writer and editor on the series, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As the Disney+ series has come to a close, landing 14 Emmy nominations this season \u2014 despite <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/tv\/2025\/andor-emmy-nominations-snubs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:controversial snubs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">controversial snubs<\/a> for stars <strong>Diego Luna<\/strong> and <strong>Genevieve O\u2019Reilly<\/strong> \u2014 the Gilroy brothers dove deeply into pivotal moments from Season 2, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/tv\/2025\/andor-ghorman-massacre-editor-yan-miles-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the tragic Ghorman Massacre;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the tragic Ghorman Massacre<\/a>, the backstory of Luthen Rael (<strong>Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>), and the sacrifice Bix Caleen (<strong>Adria Arjona<\/strong>) makes for the resistance while hiding a secret from Cassian Andor (Luna), the father of her unborn child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tony said that it was a &#8220;legit impulse&#8221; to have the final moments of the show reveal that Bix is pregnant, because he didn\u2019t want the series \u201cjust going off into the bummer of [Andor] dying\u201d in <em>Rogue One<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cLet&#8217;s be really honest, it doesn&#8217;t hurt me when I can tell [Walt Disney CEO] <strong>Bob Iger<\/strong> there&#8217;s a baby,\u201d Gilroy explained. \u201cAnd he can name it, and he can sex it, and they can do whatever they want with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, Gilroy admitted that convincing the <em>Andor<\/em> team that Bix\u2019s choice to leave Cassian was necessary proved especially difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHer willingness to leave him for the greater good was an issue that a lot of people had questions about all the way through,\u201d Tony said. \u201c\u2018Would it work?\u2019 and \u2018will it be delivered?\u2019 and \u2018are you going to be able to get us there?\u2019 All this stuff. It really helps for anybody who has any doubts. Perhaps the most notable was the Ghorman Massacre, in which the Empire unleashes extreme violence on peaceful protestors who live on the planet Ghorman \u2014 an incident that catalyzes the Rebellion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Giving editing credit to his brother John, Dan added that earlier episodes were leading up to the Ghorman Massacre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere&#8217;s so many swirling plot lines,\u201d Dan said. \u201cThis is just a constant building of suspense and tension and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the Ghorman sequence was \u201calways on the calendar,\u201d according to Tony, he and his team ultimately had to condense five seasons of storytelling into two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe were deep in shooting the first season, and I was trying to come up with a second season, and Diego and I, literally, we&#8217;re sitting in the backyard of a little hotel in Scotland having a drink and we&#8217;re like, \u2018What are we f&#8211;king going to do? We can&#8217;t do five years of this show. I mean, it&#8217;s just impossible,\u201d Tony explained. \u201c[Diego would] be ancient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Not only did it take 22 months to produce a single season, but Tony was also concerned about the potential cost and how Disney would respond. So when they landed on the timeskips, he said they felt \u201clucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe were like, \u2018Wow,\u2019 and Disney was like, \u2018OK, yeah, because we don&#8217;t want to pay for like 90 seasons of this,\u2019\u201d Tony added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, working on the story as a series versus a film gave the team more breathing room, with both storytelling and edits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cEditing is kind of like finding the truth,\u201d John said, \u201cand it just gave you that couple extra seconds per scene that you&#8217;re allowed to find the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That truth extended to the audience eventually finding out Luthen\u2019s backstory and his connection to Rebellion partner Kleya Marki (<strong>Elizabeth Dulao<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMy original reason for wanting a standalone was because I didn&#8217;t want anybody, after the show was over, to be defining that relationship,\u201d Tony said, also noting his intention to hold out on the explanation for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What the <em>Andor<\/em> team didn\u2019t intend was for the show to end up eerily similar to real-world events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMon [Mothma]&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/tv\/2025\/andor-genevieve-oreilly-mon-mothma-speech\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:speech;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">speech<\/a> was so inordinately, powerfully important to the show. And to me personally,\u201d Dan said about writing her speech, which followed the Ghorman massacre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThroughout <em>Andor<\/em>, the first two seasons covering the five years, what you&#8217;re really watching is the Senate&#8217;s descent into total Emperor control,\u201d Dan said. \u201cSo to sit down and go, that&#8217;s the assignment. I&#8217;m going to write an assignment where I&#8217;m talking to these two audiences while events in the world are mirroring what this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was getting choked up writing it because these are massively important elements in our lives, particularly right now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As the series continued, the resemblance to reality, Tony said, became uncanny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThings were fomenting as we&#8217;re going, but the detail with which the world has just grafted onto our show and started replicating what we were doing is incredibly sad and shocking to us,\u201d he said, recalling how U.S. Sen. <strong>Alex Padilla <\/strong>from California was forcibly removed from a Department of Homeland Security press conference the week <em>Andor<\/em> was showing the Ghorman senator being arrested in the Galactic Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur internal chat group is like, \u2018What the f&#8211;k?\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While Tony was well prepared to write a series about authoritarianism and rebellion, what he said he\u2019s especially proud of was the ability for the show to resonate even beyond the screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u200b\u200b\u201dI don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever convinced anybody in my family or at a dinner table to change their opinion about anything, ever,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel happy or I feel affirmed that there are people out there that the show seems to have affected in some way that makes them think about courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Best of Gold Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sign up for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pages.email.goldderby.com\/signup\/?source=yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gold Derby's Newsletter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Gold Derby&#8217;s Newsletter<\/a>.
