Meyer agreed the division is very evident.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople feel very strongly about this stuff and I would extend it to our audience,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re not just people who lap up whatever you\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n
The audience\u2019s political beliefs often manifest themselves as comments online, which, for Meyer, means the audience is engaged \u2014 and that\u2019s a good thing for late night.<\/p>\n
But at the end of the day, all Meyer, and other members of the Emmy-award winning crew can do is put their faith in the process and come up with an \u201carticulated argument\u201d to continue the nightly programming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Daily Show\u201d leans on tried and tested principles. For instance, Meyer said, \u201cyou can always go after power. We look at the institutions of power on our show, we ridicule and satirize them.\u201d<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve been doing it for almost 30 years and under many presidents. \u201cObviously, the current administration is, let\u2019s say, unique.\u201d<\/p>\n
But even on days when the Trump White House\u2019s moves create shockwaves in the media and television industry, the crew tries to keep its eye on the ball, Meyer said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Jen, our showrunner, always says, \u2018the thing that we can control is making a good show every day,\u2019\u201d Meyer said.<\/p>\n
The CBS debate<\/h3>\n The same can be said when wondering about the longevity of late-night television.<\/p>\n
Stewart, in his monologue following the cancellation of Colbert\u2019s show, said, \u201cWhen CDs stopped selling, you didn\u2019t just go, \u2018Oh well, music, it\u2019s been a good run.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
He went on to insinuate a larger play at hand.<\/p>\n

Colbert, too, protested the decision, saying, \u201cfor the next 10 months, the gloves are off,\u201d during his monologue three weeks ago. Others, like David Letterman, who hosted \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d and Trey and Matt Stone, the creators of \u201cSouth Park\u201d also offered criticism.<\/p>\n
Meyer said he\u2019s \u201calways been a fan of Colbert,\u201d even before he began his hosting gig. \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d director would tune into \u201cThe Colbert Report,\u201d which ran for 9 seasons on Comedy Central after its debut in 2005.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he\u2019s brilliant,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cI think even beyond what he\u2019s doing now, he\u2019s going to continue to do great things. … Obviously, I, you know, you want to see these shows continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart, David Meyer and full circle moments<\/h3>\n In the last two minutes of a 20-minute conversation, the Deseret News asked Meyer an impossible question. \u201cJon Stewart or Trevor Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t answer that,\u201d he laughed. \u201cTrevor and I have a history. We go way back.\u201d<\/p>\n
They got acquainted in 2008, and went on to experience a genuine friendship and several full circle moments, he said.<\/p>\n
It starts with \u201cThe Daily Show,\u201d actually. Meyer would watch the show as a freshman, while he was studying film at the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n
When it came to pursuing a thesis, he took inspiration from Stewart, the host at the time, and decided to dive into the stand-up comedy scene in South Africa. There he met Noah on stage and brought back the footage with him to the U.S.<\/p>\n
At the time, Meyer also told Noah to watch \u201cThe Daily Show.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said, \u2018OK, I\u2019ll check it out.\u2019\u201d Then, seven years later, when Noah got the gig to host the show, he asked Meyer to join him.<\/p>\n
After Noah\u2019s exit in 2022, Stewart stepped up to host once a week.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just count myself lucky to be able to work with both of them,\u201d Meyer said.<\/p>\n
Stewart \u201cmakes us better,\u201d the director said. \u201cHe demands high performance and I love that he pushes us and challenges us.\u201d<\/p>\n
And they hope that means they\u2019ll stick around.<\/p>\n
The Daily Show is rated TV-14 for moderate profanity, mild sex and nudity and mild violence and gore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
