By this time, I\u2019ve given up asking \u201cWhat\u2019s new and exciting at the box office?\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, I wonder \u201cWhat reboot or sequel is coming along?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Freakier Friday\u2019 (IMDb)<\/p>\n
In this case, it\u2019s Disney\u2019s likeable \u201cFreakier Friday,\u201d which involves not one, but two body swaps between women of different ages.<\/p>\n
Younger theater goers may not realize it, but the original \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d was a 1976 Disney release starring Barbara Harris as the mom and Jodie Foster as her daughter. They switch bodies on Friday the 13th (check it out if you haven\u2019t already. It\u2019s from another time, but the message remains the same: Walk a mile in my shoes and maybe you\u2019ll understand my perspective.)<\/p>\n
In the 2003 remake, Jamie Lee Curtis stars as the mom and Lindsay Lohan as her teenage daughter who swap bodies after they consume fortune cookies.<\/p>\n
Now Curtis is a grandmother, Lohan is a mom, and Julia Butters plays the daughter, Harper. At school, Harper runs afoul of mean girl Lily (Sophia Hammons.) And \u2026 wouldn\u2019t you know it? Lily has a single dad (Manny Jacinto) who meets Harper\u2019s mother. Sparks fly fast, and before you can say \u201cI do\u201d the two are planning a wedding, much to the dismay of their daughters who dread becoming step-sisters.<\/p>\n
This time, a psychic is the catalyst for the double body swap. The mother-daughter swap parallels the first two movies, with the Lily-grandma swap an added attraction.<\/p>\n
What I loved about the performers is their willingness to dive into the character of someone of a different age and world view. I always could tell who was who, and that was most of the entertainment for me.<\/p>\n
There are a few Easter Eggs along the way, and one of them is particularly endearing: There\u2019s a welcome cameo by Stephen Tobolowsky, reprising his character from the 2003 film. Nods to the previous movie include a fun performance by the band Pink Slip, and other characters and tunes that will delight \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d fans.<\/p>\n
Make good choices: See this one on the big screen.<\/p>\n
