Genuinely healing. I can function in everyday life without wanting to throw up or pass out from the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While many women are familiar with endometriosis \u2014 which is when tissue, similar to the lining of your uterus, starts growing outside it \u2014 \u201cchocolate cysts\u201d may not be on your radar.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@bindisueirwin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In endometriosis, the misplaced tissue acts just like the uterine lining: thickening, bleeding, and shedding with each menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Common symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, exhaustion, pain during intercourse, heavy periods, infertility, back pain, nausea and vomiting, bloating, an increasing urge to urinate, pain when peeing or pooping, and excessive menstrual cramps. <\/p>\n<p>When this tissue attaches to the ovaries, it can be filled with old blood, with turns the color of chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Ovarian endometriomas, or \u201cchocolate cysts,\u201d can be very small, grow very large, and involve one or both ovaries.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Endometriosis affects one in ten women worldwide, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Of that population, 7% to 44% will develop ovarian endometriomas.<\/p>\n<p>On average, it takes about a decade from the first signs of symptoms for a woman to finally be diagnosed with endometriosis. <\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, symptoms are dismissed by either healthcare providers or women themselves who believe that even extreme menstrual pain \u2014 the kind that causes fainting or vomiting \u2014 is just a normal part of womanhood.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Endometriomas like the ones Irwin recently had removed are signs of a more advanced stage of endometriosis. <span class=\"credit\">Pepermpron \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cStigma is lingering and alive,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/drseckin.com\/tamer-seckin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Tamer Seckin<\/a>, an endometriosis specialist, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/02\/health\/new-endometriosis-research-center-opens-on-long-island\/\">previously told The Post<\/a>. \u201cNobody believes it when women have pain.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back, every woman I\u2019ve treated over the last 30 years has carried a story of pain, of being dismissed, of fighting invisible battles that no one believed.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bindi\u2019s endometriosis battle<\/h2>\n<p>This grin and bear it ethos echoes the experience of Irwin, who first shared her endometriosis diagnosis over two years ago. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">She gave an update on her health on the February 3 episode of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/bindi-irwin-her-silent-health-battle-the-legacy-shes\/id1457268944?i=1000688618088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cA Life of Greatness\u201d<\/a>\u00a0podcast, sharing that she dealt with a decade of daily fatigue as a result of her condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went for 10 years undiagnosed because doctors really didn\u2019t know enough, they diagnosed me with a million other things, like IBS, or hormones, or \u2018It\u2019s just part of being a woman,\u2019\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe symptoms continued to snowball, and it took me such a long time to find help.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Irwin underwent surgery in March 2023 to treat her endometriosis. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@bindisueirwin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Endometriomas like the ones Irwin recently had removed are signs of a more advanced stage of endometriosis. <\/p>\n<p>Irwin first underwent surgery to treat her condition in March 2023.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are complications of chocolate cysts?<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond severe pelvic pain, complications of ovarian endometriomas include constipation, inflammation of the ovaries and fallopian tubes, an increased risk of ovarian cancer, infertility as a result of scar tissue, and the possibility of an endometrioma rupture, wherein the cyst opens and leaks, causing additional pain.<\/p>\n<p>However, when they\u2019re small and don\u2019t cause pain, they do not require treatment \u2014 but may be monitored.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are they diagnosed?<\/h2>\n<p>These cysts are initially diagnosed via pelvic exam and imaging procedures like a transvaginal ultrasound\u00a0or MRI. Treatment is dependent on factors such as age, symptoms, and reproductive goals.<\/p>\n<p>Options include medications that regulate hormones, including birth control pills, patches, vaginal rings, or IUDs. <\/p>\n<p>They may also be removed via laparoscopic surgery. Cyst removal typically improves symptoms and reduces the risk of rupture or infertility.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin was inspired to share her journey in part to destigmatize endometriosis and raise awareness about issues related to women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt utterly ashamed as a teenager and young adult being told that my pain was just part of being a woman. I felt lesser. I felt hurt. I felt weak. Young girls and women shouldn\u2019t feel alone with pain in the driver\u2019s seat of their lives. We need to take away the stigma of talking about women\u2019s health.
