British actor Ray Winstone, who is renowned for his tough guy performances in films such as\u00a0The Departed\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Sexy Beast<\/em>, touched down at the Sarajevo Film Festival this week where he participated in a wide-ranging masterclass about his career, working with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Gary Oldman, dealing with rejection and why he wants to see more British films in the ecosystem.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t get much education as an actor,\u201d said Winstone, speaking at the Bosnian Cultural Center on Tuesday. \u201cBut when I was in drama college \u2013 I was there for about a year \u2013 I was lucky enough to have met a director called Alan Clarke.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n Clarke went on to direct one of Winstone\u2019s first films,\u00a0Scum<\/em>, and the actor credits that director for helping him to learn his craft. \u201cThe performance of that film was nothing to do with me and what I learned was from Alan Clarke. Alan Clarke was a great teacher. I love directors for that reason because you put your trust in them and they\u2019re the ones that are educating you, especially when you are at a young age. So, for me, that was my schooling in the profession.\u201d<\/p>\n Winstone\u2019s role in Gary Oldman\u2019s directing debut\u00a0Nil by Mouth<\/em>\u00a0was, he said, a milestone in his career and he credited the\u00a0Slow Horses\u00a0<\/em>actor as being \u201cprobably the greatest director\u201d he\u2019s ever worked with.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s kind of the undercurrent, the underbelly of where I\u2019m from,\u201d he said about the 1997 London-set drama. \u201cI\u2019m from a working-class family, but I don\u2019t come from a family like that. But I\u2019ve seen it, and I\u2019ve heard it. It was a very brave bit of writing to actually write about these things and when I read it, I got it, and I understood it. And Gary\u2019s probably the best director I\u2019ve ever worked with. I say that as an actor, because he understands actors.\u201d<\/p>\n Winstone, who is receiving an Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award this week at the festival, also touched on working with Scorsese for\u00a0The Departed<\/em>. \u201cI met him at a hotel in London on a Sunday morning \u2013 I think it was The Dorchester. And I was up for playing one of the policemen. I didn\u2019t want to play a policeman, and it was kind of a nothing part and I sat down with Marty \u2013 I call him Marty now \u2013 and we talked about Jack Nicholson\u2019s character. I said that he hasn\u2019t got anyone to talk to. How do you find out about him?\u201d<\/p>\n Winstone then suggested he play Nicholson\u2019s character\u2019s sidekick friend and Scorsese agreed but requested he wear the leather coat he was wearing in the meeting in the film. \u201cSo, he got a coat for nothing,\u201d quipped Winstone.<\/p>\n On working with Spielberg for\u00a0Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>, Winstone said: \u201cHe loves you standing behind and watching the screen. Martin Scorsese is the same.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cIt\u2019s amazing when he makes films. How he shoots \u2013 he films differently.\u201d<\/p>\n The actor went on to add that he wants to see \u201cmore films from the British film industry\u201d coming into the ecosystem, adding that he loves \u201cwatching British actors.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe French do it \u2013 they make their own cultural films. The Germans do it. Hopefully you\u2019ll do it more here and that\u2019s the way it should be. That\u2019s where filmmakers come from. The trouble is that they emigrate to America to work with the studios, and they get their hearts broken.\u201d<\/p>\n The actor also touched on rejection and the role that plays in one\u2019s career, citing his experience on Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Black Widow<\/em>, where he was called in to reshoot all of his scenes, as a notable low point for him.<\/p>\n \u201cI told them they should recast,\u201d he recalled. \u201cBut I was contracted to do it. So, I went back, they had to do my hair nice, they put me in the suit, and I couldn\u2019t do it. I\u2019d already done it. I\u2019d done it already. I\u2019ve just done this part.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cBut then you get over it and you just redo the scenes.
