On Tuesday evening, a battle in the AL Wild Card race continues with the second meeting between the Kansas City Royals<\/a> (64-61) and Texas Rangers<\/a> (62-64). The home team took yesterday\u2019s series opener at Kauffman Stadium and surely enters this one looking to widen the gap in that race to the postseason.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a Royals vs. Rangers<\/a> prediction and pick on DraftKings Sportsbook for Tuesday\u2019s outing.<\/p>\n After a disappointing first half of the season during which they struggled to stay afloat near the .500 mark, the Kansas City Royals have quietly become one of the MLB\u2019s better teams since the All-Star Game. Over the last month, they boast a 17-11 record and seem to have revived their playoff hopes after acquiring a handful of players at the Trade Deadline to shore up the batting order and pitching staff. Since the ASG, Kansas City possesses the sixth-best OPS (.773), eighth-best batting average (.250), eighth-most runs (147), and sixth-most homers (43) in all of baseball.<\/p>\n The offensive turnaround has been a bit of a stunner since this team struggled to produce much in the scoring column prior to the break, but it\u2019s certainly a welcome change in Kansas City. They still rank fourth in ERA (3.60) on the season, though that mark falls to 10th (3.98) over the last month. Tonight, they start right-hander Seth Lugo (3.77 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 110 SO).<\/p>\n They should see some success tonight against the Rangers, who have mostly fallen back to their former selves as of late with a struggling offense. Texas\u2019 record sits at just 14-15 since the ASG as they\u2019re just 22nd in runs scored (122) as their brief hot streak at the plate around the break turned out to be a flash in the pan. The Rangers rank 23rd in OPS (.688) and 24th in average (.235), and their 29 home runs fall just 22nd as well over the same sample.<\/p>\n While Texas\u2019 arms performed at an elite level earlier this year and still sit atop the leaderboard overall (3.45 ERA, 1.19 WHIP), they\u2019re not throwing as well at the moment. The Rangers sit 12th in ERA (4.01) and 13th in WHIP (1.25) since the ASG, so with the recent decline and <\/em>lack of run support, things aren\u2019t going well in Arlington. They start righty Merrill Kelly (3.36 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 136 SO) this evening.<\/p>\n DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Rangers as slight Moneyline<\/a> favorites on the road with -112 odds to win outright. The Royals are just behind at -108 though, and the run total sits at 8.5.<\/p>\n With the preview out of the way, we can dive in with tonight\u2019s top pick. Look, Kelly is pitching well this year, but he\u2019s been a bit shaky as of late with a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across his last seven starts. That\u2019s even more true for Lugo with a 6.69 ERA and 1.62 WHIP that look far worse after he gave up six and seven earned runs in his last two starts. The big difference, though, is that the latter should see some run support given the Royals\u2019 form at the plate \u2014 the same cannot be said about the Rangers\u2019 batting order.<\/p>\n This might end up a close contest and Royals +1.5 holds some appeal, but the odds just don\u2019t make that bet worthwhile at -179. Instead, over 8.5 could bring some more upside at -111, but I\u2019m rolling with Kansas City on the Moneyline at -108. Their offense has proven themselves lately and they\u2019ve won four straight games, including the opener of this series last night by a 4-3 margin.
