The Traitors<\/em><\/a> season 3 winner Ivar Mountbatten<\/strong> is opening up about his rocky relationship with his mother, Janet Mercedes Bryce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth my brother and myself have quite a torturous relationship with her,\u201d Ivar, 62, said during his Monday, August 18, appearance on the \u201cRosebud With Gyles Brandreth\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cI mean, she never looked after us. We were brought up by nannies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Janet, 87, and her late husband, David Mountbatten<\/strong>, 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, welcomed two sons throughout their marriage: Ivar and his older brother, George Mountbatten<\/strong>, 4th Marquess of Milford Haven. David died at age 50 in 1970 when Ivar was 7 years old. His mother never remarried.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had this wonderful German nanny who looked after us right from the word go,\u201d Ivar said, reflecting on his childhood. \u201cIn fact, I went on holiday with my nanny because [she] wouldn\u2019t refuse my mother to look after us. \u2026 She would be absolutely hopeless. So we didn\u2019t really see her very much as youngsters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ivar said his mother\u2019s hands-off parenting was \u201cirritating\u201d to him and his brother when they were growing up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were always shipped off here, there and everywhere, which was fine. I\u2019m not complaining in any way, shape or form,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWe would often say to her, \u2018Why didn\u2019t you come down for Christmas? Why didn\u2019t you come down for the weekend?\u2019 Her stock answer was, \u2018I can\u2019t be bothered.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ivar explained that his mother\u2019s indifference \u201cstemmed from the fact that she had never been able to pack her own suitcase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ivar did say, however, that he never felt neglected while growing up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had the most wonderful life. I always say that I\u2019ve got nothing to complain about. I\u2019m one of those people that just gets on with it,\u201d he explained. \u201cI never complain, principally because I know that I\u2019ve had the most wonderful childhood life and I still have the most wonderful life and I\u2019ve got nothing to complain about.\u201d<\/p>\n

All these years later, Ivar\u2019s relationship with his mother hasn\u2019t gotten much better. He revealed that there is \u201cno\u201d affection between them now, which has been exacerbated by the fact that Janet has been bedridden since 2018.<\/p>\n

Ivar explained that his mother had a hip replacement and \u201crefused\u201d to do \u201call the remedial work\u201d following the surgery because it was \u201ctoo painful\u201d for her.<\/p>\n
