{"id":1970698,"date":"2025-08-20T17:03:01","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T17:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=1970698"},"modified":"2025-08-20T17:03:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T17:03:01","slug":"giants-david-huff-discusses-new-lp-and-classic-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/giants-david-huff-discusses-new-lp-and-classic-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant\u2019s David Huff discusses new LP and classic songs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>By Warren Kurtz<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-five years ago, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Giant.The.Band\/\">Giant<\/a> was in the Top 40 with \u201cSee You in My Dreams,\u201d a power ballad sharing the chart with a pair of songs in a similar genre, Aerosmith\u2019s \u201cWhat it Takes\u201d and KISS\u2019 \u201cForever.\u201d The song was the third single from their debut album <em>Last of the Runaways<\/em>, with vocalist and guitarist Dann Huff, his brother David Huff on drums, bassist Mike Brignardello, and keyboardist Alan Pasqua. Now the U.S.\u2019s David Huff and Mike Brignardello are joined by Sweden\u2019s vocalist Kent Hilli and guitarist Jimmy Westerlund, on the new Giant album <em>Stand and Deliver<\/em> from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiers.it\/\">Frontiers Music<\/a>, based in Italy. <em>Goldmine <\/em>spoke with David Huff about this international collaboration, after looking back on both sides of their Top 40 hit.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Giant&#8217;s current lineup L to R:<\/em> <em>Mike Brignardello, David Huff, Kent Hilli, Jimmy Westerlund, photo by Enzo Mazzeo<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>GOLDMINE:<\/strong> <em>Welcome to <\/em>Goldmine<em>. When singles transitioned from vinyl to cassette, \u201cI\u2019ll See You in My Dreams,\u201d from <\/em>Last of the Runaways<em> was released and became a wonderful power ballad Top 40 hit. The recording sounds like songs my wife Donna listens to on SiriusXM\u2019s Hair Nation station, with a touch of Scorpions and Whitesnake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DAVID HUFF:<\/strong> That was an incredible time in our lives when rock and roll was a big part of the pop music scene. We had a lot of influences and the guys from Scorpions would come to our shows in Europe, which was great. It is powerful, bluesy, and your steady drums are locked in with Mike\u2019s bass.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DH:<\/strong> Thank you. We had such a great time making those recordings back in the day. We stayed at a residential studio in London for four months. It was incredible. Martina was the first artist who I worked with, and I am now working with Sara. I have some amazing friends in this business and both ladies are sweethearts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GM:<\/strong> <em>In addition to the music you have worked on with others, there have been Giant albums; most recently, 2022\u2019s <\/em>Shifting Time<em>, and now <\/em>Stand and Deliver<em> which opens with \u201cIt\u2019s Not Right.\u201d Kent\u2019s vocals are wonderful, Jimmy\u2019s guitar playing reminds me of Steve Howe\u2019s work with Asia, and the lyrics jump out, \u201cno easy way out\u201d and \u201cit\u2019s not fair to start over again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DH:<\/strong> We had a great time making this album. We had a lineup change. John Roth had been playing guitar with us for years, but he had a scheduling conflict with Winger, so we found Jimmy through Frontiers. He is a great player, adding a nice flair to our sound.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Giant - &quot;It&#039;s Not Right&quot; - Official Lyric Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RgSLHF4Pkgo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>GM:<\/strong> <em>Jimmy also has a great guitar solo on \u201cA Night to Remember.\u201d Kent\u2019s vocals are emotional. I mentioned Whitesnake before, in this case he sounds a bit like David Coverdale, and your drumming steadily holds the song together.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DH:<\/strong> Kent\u2019s vocals are powerful but also have a soul to it. Eddie Money has a big influence on us. Our original keyboardist, Alan Pasqua, toured with Eddie, and we got to play as his backup band for a couple shows. \u201cShakin\u2019\u201d and \u201cTwo Tickets to Paradise\u201d are my favorite Eddie Money songs. It\u2019s kind of surreal when you get to play with one of your music heroes who you grew up listening to.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Giant - &quot;Hold The Night&quot; - Official Lyric Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b-mtxepaLOk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>GM:<\/strong> <em>The spiritual \u201cI Will Believe\u201d is catchy yet edgy, with an ending reminding me of Journey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DH:<\/strong> When you make a record, it is like Jambalaya, stirring up different influences. We pay homage to all these different acts including Foreigner, Whitesnake, Bryan Adams and Elton John.\u201d \u2013 <em>Giant\u2019s David Huff<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GM:<\/strong> <em>\u201cTime to Call it Love\u201d has a touch of \u201cSt. Elmo\u2019s Fire\u201d with<\/em> &#8216;<em>80s keyboard sounds. It is a wonderful love anthem, like what Sammy Hagar can deliver.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DH:<\/strong> This is one of the songs that came from Alessandro Del Vecchio and the guys from Frontiers. We listened to the demo and said, \u201cThis is a Giant song! Let\u2019s make it ours.\u201d I must give Serafino Perugino, the founder of Frontiers, a lot of credit for his undying loyalty to rock and roll, and to Giant. He has been a champion of ours to keep Giant alive, and said, \u201cDavid, there is an audience for you. We must record Giant!\u201d I appreciate his support and your support of Giant and your kind words about our album.
