But TV scores can provide just as much scope, emotional weight, mood, and tone to a series \u2014 dancing backwards in heels against the imagery, sneaking unseen between cuts to create tension the viewer doesn\u2019t even know they\u2019re feeling, or bursting out of the frame to carry us through the most important moments in our favorite <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/lists\/best-tv-shows-2020s\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:TV shows;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">TV shows<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>It\u2019s all the more impressive given the number of cues TV composers often have to write and how quickly the music has to come together. So, IndieWire reached out to every Emmy-nominated composer this year to ask them which TV scores from the past year were extraordinary, even among the extraordinary challenges every TV score has to solve. The respondents themselves represent a real variety of genres, formats, and styles; and their responses show that \u2014\u00a0 as Kathryn Bostic, composer behind the playful and delicate score for \u201cThe Supremes at Earl\u2019s All You Can Eat,\u201d put it \u2014 just like good food, you can cultivate a range of good musical taste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>For instance, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/only-murders-good-american-family-013443876.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ariel Marx;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Ariel Marx<\/a>, double-nominated (!) for \u201cDying For Sex\u201d and \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d \u2014 specifically her eerily lush work on the \u201cHotel Reverie\u201d episode, of which Hitchcock would likely approve \u2014 singled out the score to a different filmic disaster, \u201cThe Studio.\u201d Marx highlighted the ways that Antonio S\u00e1nchez\u2019s work radiated confidence and fine-tuned calibration in ways a fellow practitioner can appreciate. \u201cIt just felt like the magic that occurs when talented collaborators trust each other, and let \u2019em run free,\u201d Marx told IndieWire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>S\u00e1nchez, for his part, loved Federico Justid\u2019s work on the Spanish-language science-fiction yarn, \u201cThe Eternaut.\u201d Several composers behind the soaring or soul-searing music in documentary series \u2014 Caroline Shaw, composer of \u201cLeonardo da Vinci,\u201d and Kara Talve, one of the co-composers of \u201cThe Americas\u201d \u2014 singled out Theodore Shapiro\u2019s haunting vibes on \u201cSeverance.\u201d Meanwhile, Daniel Pemberton might be nominated for another episode of \u201cBlack Mirror,\u201d but Shapiro loves the distinctive sonic character that he\u2019s built over on \u201cSlow Horses.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Several composers singled out the music on animated series, where scores can be that much more experimental and have to do that much more heavy lifting, too \u2014 including Bostic and Leo Birenberg, co-composer of \u201cCobra Kai.\u201d Meanwhile, Sherri Chung pointed out that there\u2019s an art in pairing score with licensed music, and heaped praise not only on Chris Bacon for his deviously dark \u201cWednesday\u201d score, but the ways he clearly collaborates with music supervisor Jen Malone and song arranger\/producer Alana Da Fonseca.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>There was as much appreciation for music that is subtle and restrained \u2014 Ilan Eshkeri, composer behind \u201cSuper\/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,\u201d singled out the work that David Ridely and Aaron May did on \u201cAdolescence\u201d \u2014 as there was for music that has to drive whole episodes.
