A24\u2019s Friendship<\/em> is about to start streaming, and it\u2019s supposed to be nuts.<\/p>\n After hitting theaters in May, writer-director Andrew DeYoung\u2019s black comedy feature is set for its streaming launch Sept. 5 on HBO Max before debuting on HBO linear the next day. The film, which debuted on digital formats a month after its theatrical release, stars Tim Robinson, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer and Paul Rudd.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n Friendship<\/em> centers on Robinson as Craig, a socially awkward marketing executive who seeks out a friendship with his neighbor Austin (Rudd), a charming weatherman.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a new Marvel out that\u2019s supposed to be nuts,\u201d Robinson tells wife Tami (Mara) in a memorable moment from the film. \u201cWe should go see that.\u201d<\/p>\n The movie premiered at the\u00a02024 Toronto International Film Festival\u00a0as part of the Midnight Madness roster. Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Nick Weidenfeld and Johnny Holland serve as producers.<\/p>\n In his\u00a0review of\u00a0Friendship<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, critic Michael Rechtshaffen wrote, \u201cHaving successfully built a devoted following as a leading purveyor of cringe comedy with his hit Netflix sketch series,\u00a0I Think You Should Lea<\/em>ve\u00a0With Tim Robinson<\/em>, the show\u2019s rubber-faced star\/co-creator ups his game with the innocently titled\u00a0Friendship<\/em>, a gleefully discomfiting portrait of male bonding that delivers some of the year\u2019s biggest laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n A24 acquired Friendship<\/em> after it screened at TIFF, and DeYoung previously told THR<\/em><\/a> that he didn\u2019t specifically write the project with the studio\u2019s sensibility in mind.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t quite know the A24 sensibility, but of course, I am a huge fan of theirs,\u201d the filmmaker said at the time of the theatrical release. \u201cSo I just wrote a movie that would make me and Tim laugh, and I feel like that\u2019s enough to bet on.\u201d<\/p>\n Best of The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for THR’s Newsletter<\/a>.
