A new documentary delving into the cultural phenomenon of NBC\u2019s\u00a0To Catch a Predator<\/em>, which debuted in the early 2000s and featured host Chris Hansen, will follow the \u201crise and staggering fall of the show, and the world it helped create.\u201d<\/p>\n A press release for the film, titled Predators<\/em>, describes the NBC series as \u201ca popular television show designed to hunt down child predators and lure them to a film set, where they would be interviewed and eventually arrested.\u201d As part of its exploration into \u201cAmerica\u2019s obsession with watching people at their lowest,\u201d the documentary will examine \u201cthe murk of human nature to observe hunter, predator, subject and spectator alike.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n In a statement, director David Osit said that he grew up watching To Catch a Predator<\/em> as a young adult and experienced \u201ca complex stew of discomfort and schadenfreude as child predators were lured into a house, interviewed and ultimately arrested with cameras rolling for our national entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI couldn\u2019t have imagined the depths of the journey I\u2019d end up going on \u2013 how making this film would not only challenge the limits of my own empathy, but reflect the tenuous morality behind how we tell stories, report news, and make film,\u201d Osit continued. The filmmaker also shared his longtime frustration with true crime docs and his realization that it stemmed from the \u201cillusion\u201d that \u201cafter watching a true crime story, the crime will be solved and we\u2019ll get all the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n Instead, he sought to make Predators<\/em> \u201ca film that was about what happens \u2013 and what are we capable of doing to each other \u2013 when answers can\u2019t be found?\u201d<\/p>\n The upcoming documentary will include interviews with journalists, actors, law enforcers, academics, and Hansen, who hosted To Catch a Predator <\/em>from 2004 to 2007.
