Birds of Prey<\/strong><\/a> star Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> has revealed that Ewan McGregor\u2019s<\/span> Black Mask was not the original choice for the DC Extended Universe<\/a> movie\u2019s main villain.<\/p>\n While speaking with Entertainment Weekly to promote her latest movie, the fantasy romance A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, with co-lead Colin Farrell<\/a>, Robbie realized that both of them had played Batman villains, her as Harley Quinn for the DCEU and him as Penguin<\/a> in Matt Reeves\u2019 The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Both actors were surprised to have never once discussed their involvement in the DC sandbox, with Robbie noting, \u201cThat\u2019s so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n The Harley Quinn actor then revealed that the DCEU\u2019s Penguin was almost introduced in Birds of Prey, sharing, \u201cThe first draft that Christina [Hodson] wrote of Birds of Prey, the villain was the Penguin,\u201d to which Farrell, visibly shocked, responded, \u201cNo way! Really?\u201d<\/p>\n Robbie went on to explain that it was actually Farrell\u2019s Penguin that forced Hodson to replace the Batman villain with another. \u201cAnd then [The Batman<\/a> writer-director] Matt Reeves<\/a> said, \u2018Don\u2019t use the Penguin. I\u2019m going to use him in my thing.\u2019 And so we swapped it to Black Mask<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n After being pressed for more details by Farrell about Hodson\u2019s Penguin, Robbie said that it was \u201camazing\u201d and that she would email a copy of the original Birds of Prey draft to her co-star for him to read at his own leisure.<\/p>\n While the Penguin never ended up appearing in the DCEU, Farrell\u2019s take on the Batman villain in Reeves\u2019 2022 movie received critical acclaim, leading to the character headlining his own HBO limited series in 2024.
