But what\u2019s more heroic than choosing to be a saint?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a world where it\u2019s easy to become discouraged, distracted and disconnected from what truly matters, the lives of Blesseds Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati offer a radiant reminder of what it means to live fully and courageously \u2014 with eyes fixed on heaven.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These two young men, both on the cusp of sainthood, lived in very different times \u2014 Frassati in the early 20th century and Acutis in the digital age of the early 2000s \u2014 but both of these Italian young men responded wholeheartedly to God\u2019s call to live lives of heroic virtue. Their witness has personally changed my life and inspired my new song, <i>Highest Home<\/i>, which will be released on the Queenship of Mary feast day, ahead of their Sept. 7 canonizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marie Miller &quot;Highest Home&quot; Acoustic Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sAUvt1AeBhg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>I spent much of my youth making excuses \u2014 telling myself I wasn\u2019t holy enough, strong enough or wise enough to live a life of radical faith. But then I encountered Blessed Pier Giorgio and Blessed Carlo. They showed me \u2014 as they show all of us \u2014 that you are <i>never <\/i>too young to become a saint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blessed Pier Giorgio, a mountain climber and lover of the poor, once said, \u201c<i>Verso l\u2019alto<\/i>\u201d \u2014 \u201cto the heights.\u201d It wasn\u2019t just a motto for him; it was a way of life. He climbed mountains not only with his feet, but with his soul. Every act of charity, every sacrifice, every joyful moment with friends was a step closer to heaven. He was a man of action, love and contagious joy who spent his short life pouring himself out for others, particularly the poor and the sick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blessed Carlo, often called the \u201cCyber Apostle of the Eucharist,\u201d used his tech skills and love for Jesus to create a website cataloging Eucharistic miracles from around the world. He was only 15 when he died of leukemia, but his legacy is one that continues to lead thousands to encounter the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. One of Carlo\u2019s most powerful quotes is the inspiration behind the second part of my song\u2019s chorus: \u201cThe infinite will be the goal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At a young age, Carlo understood what so many of us take a lifetime to learn \u2014that we were made for more than comfort, popularity or success. We were made for <i>heaven<\/i>. That\u2019s our homeland \u2014 the only destination worth living and dying for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pope St. John Paul II once <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/messages\/youth\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_mes_15081990_vi-world-youth-day.html\" target=\"_blank\"><u>r<\/u>eminded young people<\/a>, \u201cDo not be afraid to be holy!\u201d And I think about that often when I consider the lives of Blesseds Carlo and Pier Giorgio. Our culture is obsessed with superheroes and stories about young people saving the day. But what\u2019s more heroic than choosing to be a saint? What\u2019s more radical than giving your whole life to Christ? To be holy is to participate in God\u2019s great plan \u2014 to <i>actually<\/i> save the day, or even save the world \u2014 through love, virtue and sacrifice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I sat down to write <i>Highest Home<\/i>, I imagined what it feels like to look up at the great mountain of holiness and wonder if I could ever make the climb. \u201cIt would be easier to stay on the foothills looking up,\u201d the lyrics go. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The saints show us that we don\u2019t climb alone. Christ calls us <i>higher<\/i>, and his love is the path that leads us home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The song is a prayer of courage, inspired by their example:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/><i><b>So I will climb \/ Straight to the heights \/ The infinite will be the goal \/ I\u2019m reaching for the highest home that I\u2019ve ever known.<\/b><\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I believe that\u2019s what these two soon-to-be saints would want for each of us: not to settle for mediocrity, not to stay stuck in fear or distraction, but to live fully, love radically, and keep our eyes on heaven.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the Church prepares to canonize Blessed Carlo and Blessed Pier Giorgio, my prayer is that their lives would spark a fire in the hearts of young people everywhere. May we no longer see holiness as something far off or reserved for a chosen few. May we see it for what it truly is: the adventure of a lifetime, the only one worth living.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To the heights. To the infinite.
