Sometimes it used to be boringly bad, but then suddenly became surprisingly engrossing (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/gilded-age-finale-love-george-021000473.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Gilded Age;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>The Gilded Age<\/i><\/a>). Usually, it\u2019s just <i>Real Housewives<\/i> that I\u2019m talking about. (Though not <i>Miami<\/i>. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/tv\/articles\/real-housewives-miami-completely-lose-020000224.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Real Housewives of Miami;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>The Real Housewives of Miami<\/i><\/a> is unimpeachably excellent television.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">All of this is to say, there\u2019s been no shortage of television this summer to save me from having to do the worst thing in the world (go outside). But I\u2019ve become so complacent that it never dawned on me that television can often be, and should be, <i>good<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That is why I must recommend that everyone watch <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/alien-earth-tv-series-sci-130000788.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alien: Earth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Alien: Earth<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The FX series is a prequel to the massive <i>Alien <\/i>franchise, of which there are roughly 600 films and spinoffs, the only one of which I\u2019ve seen is the original. (Sigourney Weaver, where is your Oscar?) I\u2019m opening myself up to cinephile shaming by admitting that for one very important reason: You don\u2019t have to give a single s&#8211;t about the <i>Alien<\/i> movies in order to understand <i>Alien: Earth<\/i>, let alone realize it is brilliant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">We\u2019re in no shortage of television series in the last few years that ascribe to the notion\u2014or at least the ambition\u2014or being \u201cepic.\u201d It\u2019s the race for the headline \u201cThe Next <i>Game of Thrones<\/i>.\u201d (I don\u2019t even want to search for how many reviews of series I\u2019ve put a variation of that headline on\u2026though, each time, it worked. You all clicked.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But sprawling plot, jaw-dropping locations, and expensive action sequences have never been enough. There needs to be story, and intrigue. You can\u2019t just throw budget at that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s why I\u2019m so enthralled by <i>Alien: Earth<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">From its premiere episode earlier this month, it exudes lavishness. I\u2019ve never seen a blend of practical sets (much of the series was shot on-location in Thailand) and visual effects (there are, like, space ships) that is so convincing\u2014especially in television, where budgets are a fraction of what big studios devote to sci-fi films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I\u2019ve also never been so owned in my dismissal of the sci-fi genre as \u201cnot for me.\u201d <i>Alien: Earth<\/i> reveals that, hey, if you have a good story and tell it well, it is very much \u201cfor everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><button aria-label=\"View larger image\" class=\"group absolute bottom-3 right-3 size-10 md:size-[50px] lg:inset-0 lg:size-full lg:bg-transparent\" data-ylk=\"elm:expand;itc:1;sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;\"><span class=\"absolute bottom-0 right-0 rounded-full bg-white p-3 opacity-100 shadow-elevation-3 transition-opacity duration-300 group-hover:block group-hover:opacity-100 md:p-[17px] lg:bottom-6 lg:right-6 lg:bg-white\/90 lg:p-5 lg:opacity-0 lg:shadow-none\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"size-4 lg:size-6\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\"><path d=\"M12.372.92c0-.506.41-.916.915-.916L21 0l-.004 7.712a.917.917 0 0 1-1.832 0V3.183l-6.827 6.828-1.349-1.348 6.828-6.828h-4.529a.915.915 0 0 1-.915-.915M1.835 17.816l6.828-6.828 1.349 1.349-6.829 6.827h4.529a.915.915 0 0 1 0 1.831L0 21l.004-7.713a.916.916 0 0 1 1.831 0z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><dialog aria-label=\"Modal Dialog\" aria-modal=\"true\" class=\"fixed inset-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p>Sydney Chandler as Wendy \/ FX<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The series begins by setting up a prophecy for the future of mankind: cyborgs, synthetics, or, most intriguingly hybrids: synthetic beings downloaded with human consciousness. That latter category lays out an early emotional layer to the proceedings. Terminally ill children, through the work of a megalomaniac billionaire, go through a procedure to have their souls and minds transplanted into the body of a human-looking, preternaturally strong and gifted robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When a spaceship carrying the dangerous alien predator that the series (and entire franchise) is named after crashes onto earth, a small group of those hybrids are dispatched to save everybody. There are, of course, dozens of different side plots and further context I could spend the next 400 words delivering, but that is essentially the set up. And it\u2019s such an engrossing one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i>Alien: Earth<\/i> is from creator Noah Hawley, who is behind FX\u2019s <i>Fargo<\/i> anthology series and the X-Men spinoff series <i>Legion<\/i>. When you type that out, it materializes as a no-brainer that he\u2019d be so good at making a series like this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It captures the same idiosyncrasies of the human condition and how our impulses guide us out of ordinary life into extraordinary circumstances, a la <i>Fargo<\/i>, but also features incredible world-building and a mastery of honing the big ideas of science fiction into something palatable and earthbound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Good TV? In this climate? It\u2019s hard to believe, but it\u2019s here (and streaming on Hulu).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>Let\u2019s Get Together<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is a Golden Age for stupidity in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That is complimentary, by the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One privilege of spending my entire paycheck on an apartment smaller than a hotel room at a Comfort Inn and dodging what can only be a pile of human s&#8211;t on a sidewalk on the way to paying $23 for a lunch salad is that I live in New York and get to see <i>theater<\/i>. And theater, finally, is reflecting me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">From <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/c-line-dion-musical-titanique-044403301.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Titanique;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Titanique<\/i><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/cole-escola-oh-mary-officially-081313188.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Oh, Mary!;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Oh, Mary!<\/i><\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/marla-mindelle-big-gay-jamboree-120000009.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Big Gay Jamboree;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>The Big Gay Jamboree<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i>and one-man shows like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/obsessed\/josh-sharps-ta-da-gorgeously-deranged-show-is-next-oh-mary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ta-da!;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><i>ta-da!<\/i><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/sam-morrison-grieving-sugar-daddy-003049779.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sugar Daddy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Sugar Daddy<\/i><\/a>, there has been a surge of productions that feel like my brain has just been excavated and spilled out on a stage. And, more, regular people are paying attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These shows feature a campy, idiosyncratic, and unapologetically ribald sense of humor\u2014yet underscore the madness with an incredibly earnest sense of heart and enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They are so gay. And yet, as has been revealed, universal. It is out of its mind. (Once again, complimentary.) The show, written and directed by demented genius Kevin Zak, is an 80-minute sprint of pop-culture references, nostalgia jokes, and send-ups of modern gay hookup culture. It\u2019s exhausting, in that you have to ration your laughs because the humor flies by so fast and so often.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There is a real generosity that radiates from these shows, an expression to the audience that there is a value in creative work that is silly and flamboyant, and that value is because of the intelligence and diligence behind the creation of it. These shows are \u201cstupid,\u201d but that\u2019s not pejorative. They\u2019re the smartest things happening in theater right now, and that\u2019s why they\u2019re working.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>I Need to Set Up a GoFundMe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Speaking of theater, is there some sort of Broadway Casting Olympics going on right now?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In just the last week, it was announced that Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri will be making their Broadway debuts in the play <i>Proof<\/i>. <i>The Gilded Age <\/i>and <i>The White Lotus <\/i>star Carrie Coon (aka The Queen of HBO) will head the first Broadway mounting of the celebrated play <i>Bug<\/i>. My credit card just let out a high-pitched scream, leapt out of my wallet, and jumped into the Hudson River.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>The Most Charming Feud in the World<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Seth Meyers\u2019 dog, Frisbee, died this week, which is tragic\u2026and also hilarious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meyers\u2019 friend and <i>Saturday Night Live<\/i> co-star has been so outspoken over the years about how much he hated Frisbee that, on the occasion of the dog\u2019s death, multiple clips went viral where Samberg talked about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Most recently, he was on Amy Poehler\u2019s <i>Good Hang<\/i> podcast, and Poehler, knowing that he hates Frisbee, joked that the dog had died and Samberg\u2019s response was: \u201cDon\u2019t even play, I would be so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The reason I love this is not because I think Samberg is legitimately celebrating that a friend\u2019s dog died. It\u2019s that I find it so beautiful that these people were so close that their relationship opened up to the most glorious, intimate thing a friendship can evolve to: the opportunity to tell the other person you hate something they love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s a rare thing. And Meyers, for what it\u2019s worth, is in on the joke:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>I\u2019ve Found My Next Career<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There is no greater pleasure in life than coming home from work, putting on your inside pants (soft), and plopping on the couch and putting on either HGTV or The Food Network\u2026and then scrolling through your phone and not paying attention to a single thing that is happening on TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is a <i>luxury<\/i>. Included in the release, however, are new programs, with titles like <i>Cheap A$$ Beach Houses<\/i> and <i>Tropic Like It\u2019s Hot<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I\u2019m sorry. We just get to call TV shows things like that now? I\u2019m imagining the board meeting: \u201cWe have a show about affordable houses on the beach.\u201d \u201cSounds like a cheap a&#8211; beach house to me.\u201d \u201cBrilliant.
