County Executive Frank White, Jr.<\/b><\/a> said that he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2022, had a kidney removed and is now cancer-free.<\/p>\n\u201cEarly detection saved my life,\u201d White said. \u201cI share my story to encourage others to get screened and to remind us of what truly matters \u2013 family and health.\u201d<\/p>\n
The county executive stated that he is crediting \u201cearly screening, excellent medical care, and the support of my wife, Teresa,\u201d for his recovery.<\/p>\n
White announced Wednesday that he would not seek reelection in 2026, and added in Thursday\u2019s statement that his cancer diagnosis and recovery influenced that decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis job has been one of the greatest honors of my life, but after my diagnosis, I knew I wanted more time with Teresa, my children, and my grandchildren,\u201d White said. <\/p>\n
\u201cUntil then, I remain committed to fulfilling my term of service with focus and determination. There is still important work to be done, and I intend to see it through on behalf of both our associates and the citizens of Jackson County.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was a five-time All-Star with the Kansas City Royals, winning eight Gold Gloves during his 18-year career. His No. 20 is retired by the club and he was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 1995.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing through this has strengthened my resolve,\u201d White said. \u201cI will share more about my journey and announce new efforts to expand access to kidney screenings and other preventive tools so more families can benefit from the care that saved my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
