He is especially saddened to miss his return to Tanglewood, where he has fond memories from his early days as a Conducting Fellow during the summer of 1958. We are grateful that former BSO Assistant Conductor Earl Lee is able to conduct on short notice. The repertoire will remain unchanged.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S5IMSV7X3BEEHPUHL7JVQN6EJY\">LENOX \u2014 Time flies when you\u2019re having fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NSDZ6PM22BBPXFNWGIP63PCU74\">That must explain why the end of the season is rapidly approaching at Tanglewood, the summer home of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bso.org\/tanglewood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/bso.org\/tanglewood\/\">Boston Symphony Orchestra.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4245RNXNVBBGZMUYUFST4RWH6U\">Popular music concerts continue at Tanglewood through the end of August and include <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/lynyrd-skynyrd-2025?performance=2025-08-30-19%3A00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/lynyrd-skynyrd-2025?performance=2025-08-30-19%3A00\">Lynyrd Skynyrd <\/a>(Aug. 30) and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bonnie-raitt-2025?performance=2025-08-31-19%3A00https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bonnie-raitt-2025?performance=2025-08-31-19%3A00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bonnie-raitt-2025?performance=2025-08-31-19%3A00https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bonnie-raitt-2025?performance=2025-08-31-19%3A00\">Bonnie Raitt <\/a>(Aug. 31) as well as a live taping on Aug. 28 of the NPR quiz program \u201cWait Wait\u2026 Don\u2019t Tell Me\u201d featuring special guest Paul Giamatti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MQIWBMHSHNCHXLFV6DC43IJZSY\">But if you\u2019re a fan of classical music, don\u2019t wait much longer to make the trek out to Tanglewood in the Berkshires. This weekend is the last weekend to hear the BSO and other classical musicians perform this summer, including the always-popular final weekend performance of Beethoven\u2019s Ninth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3DDYFWVDVZA6ZLTDQHXY7ARDBA\">The classical music season at Tanglewood kicked off on July 5 with an all-Rachmaninoff concert featuring conductor and BSO music director Andris Nelsons and pianist Daniil Trifonov.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U2H2LFPGK5FDZNKCLRTULTRYIQ\">Since then, it\u2019s been one fantastic weekend after another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BHEP5LRNFVGXDFC427IUZCICXI\">And part of that\u2019s due to one of the stars of the summer didn\u2019t even appear on stage \u2014 the weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GMLPT3TGIJD6HCS6MRUMSHAFJM\">\u201cThe first thing I must say is we\u2019ve been blessed with incredible weather this summer, which always helps with everyone\u2019s spirits and attendance,\u201d said Anthony \u2018Tony\u2019 Fogg, vice president of artistic planning for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, during a recent interview. \u201cSo we\u2019ve had some tremendous crowds here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"45N7CZC46RHHDPLP7FI2KF2XII\">\u201cStarting with the all-Rachmaninoff program that Andris conducted through (the opera) \u2018Tosca\u2019\u2026 to the beautiful chamber music program with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax, it\u2019s been a fantastic season,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z6YGI3EZTBAMXAYCAIJOBBHAJM\">Fogg also praised the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/tanglewood-events\/tanglewood-music-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/tanglewood-events\/tanglewood-music-center\">Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra<\/a>, which features talented, young, pre-professional musicians who spend the summer at Tanglewood as part of one of the world\u2019s greatest music academies, where they work and study with the BSO and other outstanding musicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L7EHULWEZBBP3FRKZPXRCQ42LY\">\u201cI must say, the work of our fellows in the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra has been on an extraordinary level,\u201d Fogg said. \u201cRight from the very first concert that they gave in which they performed Brahms\u2019 Second Symphony with Andris Nelsons, you could just tell that this was a very, very special group of young musicians and they have sustained that high level right throughout the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7IOWK4C7HVDUDEWY7KO6GQNAMM\">Another highlight of this summer\u2019s season was the world premiere of John Williams\u2019 Piano Concerto with Emanuel Ax. \u201cIt was so wonderful to see John here on the stage after an absence of a couple of years,\u201d Fogg said. \u201cIt was absolutely a great night in Tanglewood\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image\">\n<div class=\"article__image-wrapper\"><picture><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Keith Lockhart\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/resizer\/v2\/I2UXY7FAPRECJEZYM2LDCCBXRA.jpg?auth=2781d46f6e1e8b89fd6ca87f5679e5522471995a92c89a3474cb6a430e3d3c4c&amp;width=1280&amp;quality=90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/resizer\/v2\/I2UXY7FAPRECJEZYM2LDCCBXRA.jpg?auth=2781d46f6e1e8b89fd6ca87f5679e5522471995a92c89a3474cb6a430e3d3c4c&amp;width=500&amp;quality=90 500w,&#10;                https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/resizer\/v2\/I2UXY7FAPRECJEZYM2LDCCBXRA.jpg?auth=2781d46f6e1e8b89fd6ca87f5679e5522471995a92c89a3474cb6a430e3d3c4c&amp;width=800&amp;quality=90 800w,&#10;                https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/resizer\/v2\/I2UXY7FAPRECJEZYM2LDCCBXRA.jpg?auth=2781d46f6e1e8b89fd6ca87f5679e5522471995a92c89a3474cb6a430e3d3c4c&amp;width=1280&amp;quality=90 1280w\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"article__image-caption\"><span class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">A special concert to celebrate Keith Lockhart&#8217;s 30th anniversary at Tanglewood will be held this weekend. <\/span><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RS5C6BLE4ZGCLG3G33HYMXRJDM\">This coming weekend, classical music fans will be treated to several final performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AVZT2EHEPJBT3H4HUKFTZFFOOM\">Friday night features two concerts \u2014 the 6 p.m. prelude concert in Ozawa Hall featuring chamber music performed by members of the BSO, followed at 8 p.m. by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/boston-pops-august-22?performance=2025-08-22-20:00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Keith Lockhart\u2019s 30th Anniversary Celebration<\/a> concert with the Boston Pops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XTMPKRFXBVHF7MSKISRWMVIHXI\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing a big celebration of Keith\u2019s 30th year with a real galaxy of stars coming in with a specially devised program that highlights all of Keith\u2019s great achievements and the many musical styles that he\u2019s championed over the years with the Pops,\u201d Fogg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DPF6GXSGV5H4RN6T477JOZ6JPQ\">Lockhart has been leading the Boston Pops since 1995. The conductor\u2019s 30th anniversary concert will feature many special guests, including Lynn Ahrens, Jason Danieley, Ben Folds, Mandy Gonzalez, Bernadette Peters, Guster\u2019s Ryan Miller, John Pizzarelli, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Time for Three.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4ACSH5VGNBFBRLNREJUZR7SMSM\">The next day, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bso-august-23-kazuki-yamada?performance=2025-08-23-20:00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">BSO will perform Gustav Holst\u2019s \u201cThe Planets\u201d and Francis Poulenc\u2019s \u201cGloria\u201d<\/a> under the direction of conductor Kazuki Yamada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZEHCY45M2JGBVDW3A3YLGDV5GE\">The conductor \u201cis something of a protege of (former BSO director and conductor) Seiji Ozawa and a very prominent emerging conductor, works with many of the great orchestras of the world, most recently with the Berlin Philharmonic,\u201d Fogg said. \u201cHe\u2019s doing one of the great orchestral show pieces, \u2018The Planets\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GDGYK4OZFRD5TDU3F7K5JMJJX4\">Fogg added that the BSO originally commissioned Poulenc\u2019s \u201cGloria,\u201d which was first performed in 1961. \u201cIt\u2019s a great work for chorus, orchestra and soprano.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y46L5XEXD5HWDC3WGZDVCXBLFU\">Finally, on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/events\/bso-august-24-zubin-mehta?performance=2025-08-24-14:30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Sunday at 2:30 pm<\/a>, the BSO will perform the world premiere of Carlos Simon\u2019s \u201cWords and Prayers of My Fathers\u201d followed by Beethoven\u2019s Ninth Symphony, under the direction of the legendary conductor Zubin Mehta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R7BKBJHW7NFG7D6AY3CEHXXOMQ\">Sunday\u2019s performance will mark the first time ever that the 89-year-old conductor and former director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has conducted the BSO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CYGUXIWEVZBETDQDT2A47DHJ24\">\u201cHe\u2019s one of the most celebrated conductors of our time, but just purely coincidentally, has never actually conducted the Boston Symphony,\u201d Fogg said. \u201cHe was a fellow here at the Tanglewood Music Center back in 1958 and has been here subsequently as conductor of other orchestras. So, I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll be one of the great moments\u2026 coming to conduct Beethoven\u2019s Ninth Symphony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UJEGYTB27JAEVM4SU6BTYW77BI\">Fogg added that Simon, the inaugural Composer Chair for the BSO, \u201chas written a very, very beautiful work for unaccompanied chorus based on the writings and poetry of his father and grandfather, both of whom were ministers of the church. This is a very personal work, and I think it\u2019ll be incredible to hear the world premiere.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J6L6N7FKS5G47PG3PDBKUS4BUA\"><i><b>Tanglewood is located at 297 West St. in Lenox.
