Julia Ormond<\/strong> has landed a crushing legal blow against Hollywood powerhouse Creative Artists Agency (CAA), after a New York appeals court ruled the talent giant must face claims it failed to protect her from Harvey Weinstein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The British actress \u2014 best known for\u00a0Legends of the Fall<\/em>, where she starred opposite Brad Pitt<\/strong>, and\u00a0Sabrina \u2014<\/em>\u00a0sued CAA in 2023, alleging the agency knowingly put her in harm\u2019s way by arranging a private dinner with Weinstein in 1995 \u2014 where she says the disgraced producer sexually assaulted her.<\/p>\n

On August 21, judges ruled Ormond\u2019s case can move forward, blasting CAA\u2019s arguments as unconvincing and leaving the agency humiliated, per Bloomberg Law<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The appellate court said Ormond had laid out sufficient allegations to show that she \u201cwould have avoided assault but for CAA\u2019s misconduct in failing to warn or protect her.\u201d A jury, the court added, could reasonably conclude the agency\u2019s actions \u201cproximately caused\u201d her injuries.<\/p>\n

For Ormond, the decision is a huge win. For CAA, it\u2019s a nightmare and a bruising jury trial looms.<\/p>\n

The ruling keeps alive claims of negligence and breach of fiduciary duty \u2014 charges that strike at the very heart of the agency\u2019s relationship with its clients and the reputation of its leadership.<\/p>\n

Making matters worse for CAA, Disney and Miramax \u2014 who were also named in the lawsuit \u2014 chose to settle in July and bow out of the fight.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0citing documents lodged with a court in New York, Disney \u2013 which at the time owned Weinstein\u2019s company Miramax \u2013 paid $5.75 million in an out-of-court settlement.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Daily Mail\u00a0<\/em>further reporter the company says that the payment is not an admission of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

CAA pressed its appeal alone\u00a0and lost.<\/p>\n

An industry insider tells\u00a0Star\u00a0<\/em>that CAA\u2019s refusal to settle is already backfiring \u2014 and the agency is now turning on Disney for apparently abandoning them in the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cCAA are going scorched earth against Disney and making all kinds of threats behind the scenes. They are boxed in and playing a very dangerous game,\u201d the industry insider says.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, an employee at CAA, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: \u201cPeople across all levels here feel the same disgust with how senior leadership are handling this. Where is the accountability?\u201d<\/p>\n

For Ormand\u2019s part, her lawyers are confident they can show a jury the talent agency was aware of Weinstein\u2019s conduct and that they also could have protected the actress and other women.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to trial, where we are confident CAA will be held responsible for its systematic failure to protect Ms. Ormond and countless other women from Weinstein\u2019s abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creative Artists Agency called the suit baseless and denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
