The post The Smiths\u2019 Mike Joyce Announces Memoir The Drums<\/a> appeared first on Consequence<\/a>.<\/p>\n When it comes to The Smiths<\/a>, both Morrissey<\/a> and Johnny Marr<\/a> often hog the bulk of media coverage. But lest we forget, drummer Mike Joyce<\/a> was there the whole time, keeping time to all the wonderful, wonderful rock music and corresponding drama. Now, Joyce will get to tell his very own story with a forthcoming autobiography.<\/p>\n In what\u2019s perhaps the mostly perfectly-titled book ever, The Drums<\/a> will be published via New Modern ,an imprint of HMV from Putman Publishing (pre-orders are now ongoing<\/a>). The \u201cno-holds-barred story\u201d will feature \u201chonest and witty reflections\u201d as Joyce attempts to address the \u201cquestion he and bassist Andy Rourke used to often ask each other: \u2018Where did it all go right?’\u201d<\/p>\n As such, Joyce\u2019s writings generally eschew more \u201cwell-documented iconic moments\u201d in the band\u2019s history and instead focus on his \u201cfeelings\u201d as the band rose to fame before abruptly crashing down between 1982 and 1987.<\/p>\n \u201cHis off-piste, frank and witty perspective allows him to re-contextualize fan favorite moments through a beautifully vulnerable, human insight into his life,\u201d reads the book\u2019s description.<\/p>\n It\u2019s seemingly a book not just about being a rock star, but what it\u2019s like to get a behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of indie rock\u2019s most shiny progenitors.<\/p>\n Or, as the description further read, \u201cIn The Drums, Mike Joyce finally gives us the perspective of the self-confessed biggest Smiths fan in the world who from the start was just some lad from the suburbs of Fallowfield who played the drums.\u201d (Given the depths to which Joyce has had to go to defend Morrissey over the years<\/a>, it\u2019s likely best that he focus on his own role in The Smiths\u2019 history.)<\/p>\n Joyce\u2019s autobiography will be the last such tome released by the band\u2019s four members. Morrissey unveiled the stupidly-titled Autobiography in October 2013; GQ <\/a>said it was \u201cdour, over-the-top, and frustrating as even the man\u2019s staunchest devotees might expect.\u201d From there, Johnny Marr released Set the Boy Free: The Autobiography in late 2016. The Guardian<\/a> noted that it was a \u201cbreezy and smart memoir,\u201d and that Marr had only included \u201cthe odd dig at Morrissey.\u201d<\/p>\n And while technically not an autobiography, Rourke (who passed away in May 2023<\/a>) was interviewed heavily (alongside Marr) for 2012\u2019s A Light That Never Goes Out: The Enduring Saga of the Smiths. Slate <\/a>deemed it an \u201cexhaustive, exhausting book,\u201d and that it would likely only satisfy the most hardcore of Smiths devotees.<\/p>\n The Drums will be released on November 6th.
