In a new Associated Press interview<\/a> \u2014 timed to his starring role in the Prime Video<\/a> thriller series Butterfly<\/a> \u2014 the Lost<\/a> alum fielded a question about backlash toward DEI in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing it,\u201d he replied. \u201cIf you look at what happened with Paramount and CBS News, we\u2019re seeing a chilling effect on free speech and journalism and DEI.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Skydance Media and Paramount Global worked to get federal approval for its $8 billion merger, Paramount said it would pay Donald Trump $16 million<\/a> to settle his 60 Minutes lawsuit \u2014 sparking internal<\/a> and external controversy<\/a> \u2014 and Skydance told the Federal Communications Commission that Paramount had eliminated DEI initiatives<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018DEI\u2019 is a bad word these days, but to me, DEI\u2019s not a fad,\u201d Kim said. \u201cThe idea of inclusion is not something that\u2019s a political trend. It\u2019s my life. It\u2019s what I\u2019ve lived every decade I\u2019ve been in this business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of diversity, the former Hawaii Five-0<\/a> actor also discussed actors of color taking stereotypical roles to break into showbiz. \u201cIt\u2019s much easier once you\u2019re more successful and more established because you have more financial stability,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that, if you\u2019re not a person of color, or someone who\u2019s a minority in the United States, you don\u2019t have to think about. You don\u2019t think about what this role means for the rest of a nation or an ethnicity. You just do what you\u2019re drawn to, and that\u2019s very liberating. I am lucky enough now where I can also make those same choices. But I don\u2019t ever escape the fact that whatever I do will be watched and seen by so many people and judged through their own lens and filters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kim is hoping to break into a certain genre: \u201cI\u2019m still waiting to play a romantic lead after all these years,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve never gotten the opportunity and it\u2019s one of those interesting things because I look the way I do as an Asian American and Asian men were never considered handsome or sexy. That\u2019s changing now though.\u201d<\/p>\n
