{"id":1978380,"date":"2025-08-25T08:34:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T08:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=1978380"},"modified":"2025-08-25T08:34:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T08:34:24","slug":"new-toxic-workplace-culture-report-surfaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/new-toxic-workplace-culture-report-surfaces\/","title":{"rendered":"New &#8216;Toxic&#8217; Workplace Culture Report Surfaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>New claims surfaced on the weekend of a \u201ctoxic\u201d workplace culture at Sony Music.<\/p>\n<p>An article published Saturday in Sydney\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/subscribe\/news\/1\/?sourceCode=DTWEB_WRE170_a_GGL&amp;dest=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailytelegraph.com.au%2Fnews%2Fnsw%2Fstaff-continue-to-lodge-untested-complaints-about-sony-australia-ceo-vanessa-picken%2Fnews-story%2F9441afdd60318d6d61630bd15757b80a&amp;memtype=anonymous&amp;mode=premium&amp;v21=HIGH-Segment-2-SCORE\"><em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a> claims that formal complaints were made about Sony Music Australia and New Zealand Chair and CEO Vanessa Picken, and that an earlier, separate investigation was launched into her behaviour, which cleared her of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Sony Music is aware of the report. \u201cDuring this chapter of significant transition for our Australian company, it is inevitable that there will be hurdles to overcome in the workplace,\u201d reads a statement to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/themusicnetwork.com\/sony-music-response-report-toxic-workplace-culture-anz-affiliate\/\">The Music Network<\/a>, issued by Sony Music Entertainment\u2019s corporate communications team in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to take any concerns within this environment seriously and look into them thoroughly and fairly,\u201d the message continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith any type of inquiry, following our internal practices, policies, and adhering to local laws, we are conscious at all times of meeting our legal and governance obligations, respecting confidentiality and personal privacy. Any assertions made to the contrary are false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Telegraph, some employees are said to have accused Picken of undermining senior employees, making inappropriate statements about people on maternity leave, and saying \u201crude and demeaning remarks\u201d about staff. That task was urgent, complex, and central to Sony Music\u2019s future in this region,\u201d remarks Picken in a statement, seen by TMN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the support of an executive team, I have sought to implement a program of cultural reform focused on transparency, respect, and accountability and I am proud of our achievements to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaningful cultural change is challenging, but as we strive for continuous improvement across the business we are also invested in staff engagement, diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI acknowledge that there is always more to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26850 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images-r2-1.thebrag.com\/var\/uploads\/2025\/08\/sony-music-logo-GettyImages-2194122543-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Picken took the top job at Sony Music\u2019s domestic operations in June 2022, following the well-publicised removal of Denis Handlin, who had served with the company for 51 years, including 37 at the helm.<\/p>\n<p>Handlin\u2019s ouster was made public in June 2021, following a string of reports published in the national press that addressed multiple instances of a \u201ctoxic\u201d culture and bad behaviour at Sony Music\u2019s ANZ HQ, and the broadcast of a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/sony-music-denis-handlin-abusive-australia-1235086297\/\">damning<\/a> ABC \u201cFour Corners\u201d investigation, one that brought the record industry, briefly, into the public conversation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Variety AU\/NZ<\/em> does not suggest any of the complaints were made about Handlin personally or that the complaints made under the leadership of the CEOs are the same.<\/p>\n<p>The Music Network described Picken\u2019s appointment at the time as a \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/themusicnetwork.com\/sony-music-vanessa-picken-ceo\/\">reset<\/a>,\u201d noting that the music industry professional \u201cknows the music industry inside-out\u201d, and came into the gig with \u201cinternational clout and a stack of experience working with majors and indies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when she signed her contract, Picken became the first female boss of the music major. Earlier in 2025, Picken was lauded in Billboard\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/billboard-global-power-players-2025-list\/\">Global Power Players<\/a> list, a salute to several milestones overseen at the business that included the signing in March of Sydney-based electronic trio Mansionair to a worldwide deal, plus 2024 deals with Angus &amp; Julia Stone, Gang Of Youths, Dylan Wright, and Birdz &amp; Fred Leone; the launch of Sony Music Masterworks ANZ, a live music and experiential division; and more.<\/p>\n<p>The article published in The Daily Telegraph was penned by senior reporter Nathanael Cooper, who led the Sydney Morning Herald\u2019s coverage of internal strife at Sony Music ANZ which led up to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/pro\/news\/sony-australia-workplace-abuse-denis-handlin-documentary-1240307\/\">departure of Handlin<\/a> and several other executives.
