Emily Beecham has joked that her King & Conqueror co-star James Norton<\/a> was \u201csuffocated\u201d by her wig during the sex scenes they shot for the BBC\u2019s new historical drama.<\/p>\n

The actor stars as Edith the Fair opposite Norton\u2019s Harold Godwinson in the medieval period drama<\/a>, a fictionalised retelling of the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Tatler<\/a> magazine last week, Beecham, 41, said that filming intimate scenes with Norton, 40, was easy thanks to their decade-long friendship.<\/p>\n

However, there were other complications. Norton apparently found shooting the show painful at times, as he broke his collarbone falling from a horse during the shoot in Iceland.<\/p>\n

On top of this, Beecham\u2019s auburn wig was \u201chumungous\u201d and often got in the way: \u201cEspecially lying in a bed with Harold or being on top of Harold and looking down at him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019d get suffocated by this massive wig up his nostrils. That\u2019s tricky. Or you roll onto the bed and accidentally tug the wig off.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a two-star review of the series<\/a>, The Independent\u2019s critic Nick Hilton warned that viewers might struggle due to the show being \u201calmost unwatchably dark\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been an issue with so many BBC period dramas (Great Expectations, Jamaica Inn, The Luminaries etc) that it must also be interpreted as a conscious aesthetic choice,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was an era, after all, before electric light, so candlelit parleys have a certain logic. But when Stanley Kubrick used natural light to shoot Barry Lyndon, he accompanied it with a letter to projectionists. \u2018An infinite amount of care was given to the look of Barry Lyndon,\u2019 Kubrick wrote. \u2018The careful handling of the film will make this effort worthwhile.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBut TV viewers are not aided by a projectionist to monitor the lamberts and adjust the aspect ratio. They watch on TVs, laptops, mobile phones \u2013 and much of King & Conqueror will dissolve for them into blackness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reviewing the cast\u2019s performances, he described Norton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau<\/a>\u2019s William the Conqueror as \u201crather bland vessels, bobbing along on the tide of internal politics\u2026 their wives [Beecham and Cl\u00e9mence Po\u00e9sy as Matilda] are equally staid\u201d.<\/p>\n

Other critics were similarly unimpressed, with The Telegraph branding it \u201cmore Monty Python than Game of Thrones\u201d and The Guardian noting that it \u201changs a little too heavy\u201d to achieve its goal of being a \u201cripping yarn\u201d.<\/p>\n
