East Atlanta rapper Young Nudy makes street-rap albums intended to soundtrack all-night gaming sessions and riding \u2018round town, smoked out with nothing to do. He has a few important qualities that elevate him among the street-rap chaff: his cousin is platinum-certified star 21 Savage, and he has a strong ear for beats that makes his material listenable, even when his vocal performance can\u2019t quite match them. He\u2019s also authored a handful of classic moments, like the mythical 2019 internet leak \u201cPissy Pamper\u201d with Playboi Carti, and 8-bit bangers like 2017\u2019s \u201cEA\u201d and \u201cHell Shell.\u201d Nudy\u2019s work doesn\u2019t promise conceptual transcendence. Instead, one waits for a handful of moments when his casually menacing persona clicks with a memorable bop, resulting in a few minutes of earworm ecstasy.<\/p>\n
On Paradise<\/em>, those moments arrive in \u201cWhat\u2019s Happenin\u2019,\u201d where Nudy lifts the hook from Trap Squad\u2019s mid-Aughts snap-music gem of the same name, and which features a sharp cameo from Latto. \u201cFuck Donald Trump, I ain\u2019t vote for this presi,\u201d she charges. Then there\u2019s \u201cIced Tea,\u201d which finds Nudy trading bars with 21 Savage and Project Pat. Nudy has a decent sense of wordplay, but it usually falls into the category of boasts like \u201cYour bitch, I\u2019m on her mind, you can hear that shit\/I screen-record her all the time when she suck my dick\u201d on \u201c17\u201d and \u201cPussy juicy, baby, like it\u2019s cantaloupe\u201d from \u201cChains On.\u201d He often sounds like other, more compelling rappers like Gucci Mane (the strip-club excursion \u201cBTA\u201d). Still, Nudy\u2019s commitment to a gruff, whispery flow, and the way he nods to old-school ATL trappers like Jeezy and the late Shawty Lo, help make threats like \u201cI\u2019m from East Atlanta, bitch, don\u2019t get your shit popped\/We ain\u2019t do it for the camera, this shit ain\u2019t TikTok\u201d from the title track believable. As a result, Paradise <\/em>is a disjointed but not entirely unsuccessful 45-minute affair.
