At the Delacorte Theater.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTwelfth Night,\u201d a comedy of disguises and mistaken identities, is a smart play to reopen Shakespeare in the Park with after a two-year-long renovation break.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting in the 62-year-old open-air Delacorte Theater, you sure recognize the old girl. But something is a bit off. Or, in this particular instance, about $85 million off.<\/p>\n<p>The venue is sleeker and cleaner, like a mid-century modern house.<\/p>\n<p>And onstage, Viola, played by the incandescent Lupita Nyong\u2019o, has changed too. After a shipwreck, Vi also gets a \u201cwait a minute?\u201d makeover when she\u2019s stranded in faraway Illyria. She dons a suit, widens her stance and pretends to be a man, Cesario, to go work for the powerful Duke Orsino.<\/p>\n<p>The crafty woman shakes things up to get by in an unfamiliar land, just like the Delacorte got some TLC to make it through another six decades of storms, dirt and raccoons.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Spiffed up though the environment is, the nutty \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d \u2014 bathed in seductive red and purple light \u2014 is a throwback to starry Park plays that used to be the norm off 81st Street. Back when thousands lined up to see Meryl or Pacino.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lupita Nyong\u2019o stars in \u201cTwelfth Night.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Joan Marcus<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Oscar winner Nyong\u2019o is joined by heavy-hitters Sandra Oh, Peter Dinklage and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. (Granted, the \u201cModern Family\u201d actor has appeared in almost as many Delacorte shows as the moon).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All of the bold-facers are impeccably cast and admirably ridiculous in director Saheem Ali\u2019s production, which is always a good time, if somewhat disjointed.<\/p>\n<p>Illyria, here, is repped by giant 3D signage in the back that reads \u201cWHAT YOU WILL,\u201d the second half of the play\u2019s title that basically means \u201cgo crazy.\u201d Everybody heeds its advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oh, excellent, enters through the letter \u201cO\u201d as Olivia.<\/p>\n<p>She radiates joy as the object of Malvolio and Orsino\u2019s googly eyes; a regal woman in mourning who snaps out of it when she falls for Cesario and goes after him with gusto \u2014 not knowing he\u2019s really Viola.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sandra Oh\u2019s Olivia woos Cesario \u2014 actually Viola \u2014 in \u201cTwelfth Night.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Joan Marcus<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The former \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d actress\u2019 theater work has lately been somber and serious \u2014 \u201cThe Welkin\u201d and \u201cDeath and the Maiden.\u201d But it\u2019s nice to revisit her smiling \u201cUnder the Tuscan Sun\u201d and \u201cSideways\u201d spirit. Oh\u2019s irresistible.<\/p>\n<p>She certainly is to Kris Davis\u2019 smitten Orsino, who is envisioned as an fitness-obsessed mogul with a squad of \u201cyes\u201d men doing pushups and\u00a0music-video aesthetic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And to Dinklage\u2019s officious Malvolio, who starts off as a rude, barking \u201cOffice Space\u201d type whose arms don\u2019t swing as he walks solely in straight lines. By the end, he\u2019s a feral, love-sick clown.<\/p>\n<p>The show is 99% comedy, but the purist form is drunkard Sir Toby Belch (John Ellison Conlee) stumbling around and doing lines of coke in a heart-shaped bathtub with Sir Andrew Aguecheek, played by Ferguson as practically a car dealership inflatable man.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Much of the comedy comes from Jesse Tyler Ferguson and John Ellison Conlee. <span class=\"credit\">Joan Marcus<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While not all of these brands of humor or even acting cohere, they\u2019re separately very entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>Some bumps do come from Moses Sumney as Feste, the fool who, in typical Shakespearean fashion, is the wisest of them all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sumney wields an electric guitar and has a beautiful floating falsetto as he sings the fool\u2019s songs. However, the music too freely gives into the poems\u2019 darkness, and the numbers stop the show dead \u2014 pretty though they are.<\/p>\n<p>His classical acting is not on the same level as the rest, either, which muddles his biggest, rather important scene with Malvolio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Peter Dinklage plays irritable Malvolio.   <span class=\"credit\">Joan Marcus<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A find here is Lupita Nyongo\u2019s actual brother, James Nyong\u2019o, as Viola\u2019s lost sibling Sebastian. The words easily trip off his tongue and he clicks with his famous sister as well as you\u2019d hope he would.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She, of course, is commanding and warm, fragile and formidable, and very funny in spots.
