SPOOF heavy metal band Spinal Tap held a\u00a0\u2018secret gig\u2019 at Stonehenge<\/a> on Thursday evening (August 21), reports in the national media claim.<\/p>\n

Photographs published on social media last week showed temporary staging\u00a0next to the\u00a0famous stone circle. English Heritage, which manages the site, confirmed filming was taking place but remained tight-lipped about the details.<\/p>\n

Now, the\u00a0Daily Mail\u00a0has revealed that Stonehenge hosted the fictitious rockers<\/a> (consisting of\u00a0Michael McKean, Harry Shearer\u00a0and Christopher Guest)\u00a0plus special guests\u00a0Shania Twain,\u00a0Josh Groban and\u00a0Eric Clapton.<\/p>\n

The newspaper also reported that celebrities Myleene Klass and Jamie Lee Curtis were in the crowd<\/a> for the one-off performance.<\/p>\n

The tourist attraction closed early on several days last week, but some fans watched on from a nearby footpath.<\/p>\n

One, James Morgan, told the BBC<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cLittle did I know they were filming the climax to Spinal Tap 2. I almost passed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t care about Stonehenge any more. I was losing the plot. I was so thrilled, I couldn’t cope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nick Bull, who runs the Stonehenge Dronescapes<\/a> page on Facebook, posted a picture with the caption: \u201cJust a normal evening at Stonehenge with Spinal Tap and Shania Twain on stage. Nothing to see here, move along.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second Spinal Tap mockumentary, called\u00a0The End Continues,\u00a0is expected to be released on September 12 as a follow-up\u00a0to 1984’s\u00a0This Is Spinal Tap.<\/p>\n

Stars including Sir Elton John and Sir\u00a0Paul McCartney will make cameo appearances. Sir Elton has already been in a new music video for\u00a0\u2018Stonehenge\u2019<\/a>, a hit from the original cult classic.<\/p>\n

The film will also feature Canadian singer Paul Shaffer, The Nanny star Fran Drescher and British comedians Nina Conti, Kerry Godliman and Chris Addison.<\/p>\n

Stonehenge holds significance for the band: in the first film, they\u00a0were left embarrassed after accidentally ordering an 18-inch replica of the historic landmark rather than an impressive 18-foot version.<\/p>\n

Both films were directed by Rob\u00a0Reiner.<\/p>\n

The 1984 film poked fun at heavy rock bands for their backstage antics, ridiculous outfits and serious musicians, and was critically acclaimed for skewering the genre.<\/p>\n

Spinal\u00a0Tap\u00a0briefly performed as a real band, reuniting for a tribute to Freddie Mercury, Glastonbury and environmental Live Earth concerts.<\/p>\n

In 2009, the mock group were nominated for Classic Rock magazine\u2019s Roll of Honour.<\/p>\n

An English Heritage spokesperson said:\u00a0\u201cStonehenge is currently hosting a filming hire and, whilst we can\u2019t confirm any details at present, there will be an announcement on the project in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
