He admits <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/04\/12\/sports\/celtics-drew-carter-boston-marathon\/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">the decision to make Boston his first marathon<\/a> was probably stupid, but in the end, all of his training paid off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">\u201cIt was hard to train on the road,\u201d said Carter. \u201cI\u2019ve got a pretty busy schedule, obviously. But without the training, you obviously can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Running in partnership with the Shamrock Foundation, the 27-year-old Carter \u2014 who finished in three hours, 48 minutes, and 2 seconds \u2014 raised more than $10,000. James also had \u201cfive or six\u201d beers on the course, starting at mile No. 6. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">\u201cWhen you have a little buzz, it\u2019s easier to get up the hill,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a fun day. She also held the women\u2019s marathon world record for 16 years from 2003 to 2019 with a time of 2:15:25. He ran last year\u2019s Marathon in support of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/giving.massgeneral.org\/events\/mass-general-marathon-team\" target=\"_blank\">Mass General Marathon Team<\/a> raising money for pediatric cancer research and finished in 4:08:08.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">This year, Sager raised $18,129 for Mass General and finished with a time of 4:35:14.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><h4 id=\"troy_hoyt_grandson_of_dick_hoyt\" class=\"heading | bold font_primary gutter_20_0--mobile &#10;             padding_top_24\">Troy Hoyt, grandson of Dick Hoyt<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Dick and Rick Hoyt were staples of the Boston Marathon for decades, as the father-son duo completed 32 races together, which Dick pushing his son, Rick, in a wheelchair along the course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Rick, a quadriplegic who had cerebral palsy, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2023\/05\/22\/metro\/rick-hoyt-obituary\/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\" target=\"_blank\">died last May<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2021\/03\/18\/metro\/dick-hoyt-heart-soul-boston-marathon-dies-80\/?p1=BGSearch_Overlay_Results&amp;p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\" target=\"_blank\">two years after his father<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Troy Hoyt, one of Dick\u2019s grandsons, has run the past two Marathons in Dick and Rick\u2019s honor. He raised money along the way for Team Hoyt, part of the Hoyt Foundation, which was formed with the goal of building \u201cthe individual character, self-confidence, and self-esteem of America\u2019s young people with disabilities through inclusion in all facets of daily life,\u201d according to its website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">This year, the Hoyt Foundation had 25 runners and raised over $252,000, according to Russ Hoyt. Troy Hoyt finished Monday\u2019s marathon in 4:28:50.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><h4 id=\"dave_fortier_2013_boston_marathon_bombing_survivor\" class=\"heading | bold font_primary gutter_20_0--mobile &#10;             padding_top_24\">Dave Fortier, 2013 Boston Marathon bombing survivor<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">While running the Boston Marathon in 2013 in support of a friend, Fortier was injured by the first bomb. He suffered shrapnel wounds and hearing loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">After the attack, Fortier and other survivors were moved by the support offered to them by the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oneworldstrong.org\/our-story\" target=\"_blank\">Semper Fi Fund<\/a>, a group of veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. That support led Fortier to found the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oneworldstrong.org\/team-4\" target=\"_blank\">One World Strong Foundation<\/a>, where he now serves as president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">He has run more than dozen marathons since that first race in 2013, including Boston the last two years.
