Bruce Willis\u2019<\/strong><\/a> wife, Emma Heming Willis<\/strong><\/a>, sat down for an emotional interview about the actor\u2019s struggle with dementia \u2014 revealing she sought treatment for depression<\/a> after his diagnosis.<\/p>\n

The author, 47, spoke with Diane Sawyer<\/strong><\/a> during the ABC special Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey<\/em>, which aired on Tuesday, August 26. Emma said she was \u201closing it\u201d after the diagnosis and felt \u201cso alone\u201d and \u201cso isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma shared she turned to experts for help while navigating her husband\u2019s condition and her own mental health struggles, and brought in caregivers to help tend to Bruce around the clock.<\/p>\n

Now, she\u2019s focused on shining more light on the disease and treatment, finding a community of people who share a \u201ccommon thread\u201d with her.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBruce Willis and Emma Heming Willis have been by each other\u2019s side since their early 2000s meet-cute. The duo met in 2007 while working out at their mutual trainer\u2019s gym. After two years of dating, Emma and Bruce walked down the aisle in Turks and Caicos. Six days later, they wed again in a civil [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThat is this whole motivation for me to raise awareness about this disease, because we want families, we want people to be able to be diagnosed earlier, when they can participate in these trials,\u201d she said, hoping that people remember the \u201crare disease Bruce Willis has\u201d and feel less alone in their quest for answers.<\/p>\n

Emma revealed she came up with a list of tips for friends and family of the small, practical things that can help a caregiver get through the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very fortunate enough that we can afford care and many families are not able to. Formal caregiving is astronomical, yet they deserve every penny,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In March 2022, Bruce\u2019s family \u2014 including Emma, his daughters, Rumer<\/strong>, Scout<\/strong>, Tallulah<\/strong>, Mabel and Evelyn, and ex-wife Demi Moore<\/strong> \u2014 announced his aphasia diagnosis<\/a> along with his retirement from acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Bruce\u2019s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,\u201d the family said in a statement at the time. \u201cAs a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family acknowledged the \u201creally challenging time\u201d but emphasized they were \u201cappreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement concluded: \u201cWe are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, \u2018Live it up,\u2019 and together we plan to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Die Hard actor was married to Demi Moore from 1987 to 2000 and the twosome welcomed daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah in 1988, 1991 and 1994, respectively. Following his split from Moore in 2000, Willis tied the knot with Emma Heming Willis in 2009. The couple went [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSince we announced Bruce\u2019s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce\u2019s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD),\u201d they wrote in a February 2023 statement via the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration. \u201cUnfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Bruce battled frontotemporal dementia, the family hoped \u201cthat any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research,\u201d adding that Bruce \u201calways believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately.\u201d<\/p>\n
