Spotify users aren’t happy following the streaming service’s <\/a>latest announcement.<\/p>\n

Yesterday (August 26), the music app<\/a> revealed it will be introducing DMs (direct messaging) to its service, meaning users will be able to contact each other directly.<\/p>\n

According to Spotify, it has created this feature so that people can more easily share their favourite music and podcasts. “Spotify users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they\u2019re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations,” a press release from the company said.<\/p>\n

Continuing, Spotify explained that the service will be rolled out next week to users aged 16 and over, both on Standard and Premium plans.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, Spotify users aren’t happy about this update, slamming the feature as “unnecessary”.<\/p>\n

Taking to X, one social media user wrote, “I just want to listen to my music in peace, I have no interest in chatting with my friends, I think there are enough platforms to already do that. let something be as it is.” Another person also agreed, adding, “I speak for everyone when I say we don\u2019t need this feature.”<\/p>\n

Some X users further wondered whether this implementation was to make age verification more seamless on the platform. “My guess is that adding DMs means they can justify requiring age verification,” one person wrote. Another person agreed with their sentiment, replying, “This is a good take.”<\/p>\n

Many seasoned Spotify users also noted that this isn’t the first time the platform has had this feature, as the app previously used DMs before scrapping it around eight years ago. “Yeah, I used this all the time and was super bummed that they got rid of it! Rad that they\u2019re adding it back,” one Spotify user said.<\/p>\n

But this isn’t the first time in recent months that Spotify has added new features to its platform. In May, the company announced it was making changes to its listening features, meaning users could now access Smart Shuffle, AI Playlist, and Jam more easily. It also added a revamped the Hide button, which can remove a song from your recommendations for 30 days.<\/p>\n

In June, the streaming service also added the ability to share what you’re listening to on Instagram, and earlier this month, it announced you can now mix your playlists to control how songs transition and make them flow more seamlessly, as if you were your own DJ.<\/p>\n

However, a number of Reddit users claimed they’d moved streaming platforms since these changes, citing that they want an app where they can just listen to music.<\/p>\n

“Switching to Apple Music has been the best decision. None of this bulls–t, just music,” one person wrote, while another replied, “Switching to Tidal has made me very happy. It’s just music and I love it.”<\/p>\n
