Tyler Baltierra<\/strong><\/a> revealed that he was recently diagnosed with autism.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I would have known about my stuff, being autistic or being on the spectrum, would that have changed my therapy?\u201d the Teen Mom<\/em> alum, 33, said on the Wednesday, August 27, episode of his and wife Catelynn Baltierra<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cCate & Ty Break It Down\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cIt got me thinking, \u2018Wow, there\u2019s so many things that could have been different.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler recalled growing up being a handful as a kid, as he was \u201ckicked out of schools\u201d and \u201cmultiple daycares.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, my mom was so focused on me not having meltdowns,\u201d he reflected. \u201cI thought I was just an ADHD hyper kid, whatever. All my behavioral issues in school [were] because I pretty much can\u2019t control myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Tyler knew that he was different, he didn\u2019t think to get tested for autism<\/a> until he noticed his and Catelynn\u2019s 6-year-old daughter, Vaeda, had some quirks similar to his as a kid.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a little bit more of a present parent, I think, than my mom could have been back then with more knowledge about this kind of stuff,\u201d he confessed. \u201cJust seeing so many things in Vaeda that I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my god, I get why she\u2019s doing that. Oh my god, when I was a kid, I remember doing that, like, wondering why doesn\u2019t anyone understand what I\u2019m saying? Or how important this stupid little thing is to me.\u2019 First thing I noticed is that small things [that] should not be a big deal are a huge deal to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler shared he was previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, the bipolar diagnosis didn\u2019t \u201csit\u201d well with him because he didn\u2019t experience the highs and lows that come from the condition. When Tyler underwent the autism test, the doctor was able to explain his mood swings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was talking to the [woman who administered the autism test] \u2026 she was like, \u2018Your mood swings are based [on] things not going right in your weird little routine that I won\u2019t be able to understand, your wife will never be able to understand fully. You can explain it as much as you can about how these things operate in your head and how when one thing is off \u2026 so these mood swings come across [like] something really frustrated you real quick,\u2019\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Tyler\u2019s results came back stating he was on the spectrum. His doctor explained that he \u201cranked super high in masking,\u201d which can be common for getting a late diagnosis at his age.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you\u2019ve done is dissected all the things socially growing up and you know what\u2019s acceptable and what\u2019s not acceptable,\u201d he recalled the medical professional telling him. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes you not on the other extreme side of this to where you know you have to be a certain way to fit in or to seem normal socially \u2026 but inside it\u2019s a chaotic anxiety storm and it doesn\u2019t come across externally because you\u2019ve been doing it for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n

After finally getting an answer about his struggles throughout his life, Tyler was relieved but also felt bad because it came later in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt like a big sigh of relief. Then I got really sad and I was like, \u2018Wow,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI just thought about all the things I went through as a kid. I just felt so sad for that little kid who wondered, \u2018What\u2019s wrong with me? Something\u2019s wrong, why am I not normal?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
