Maren Morris was nearly done with her seven-song set at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York when her face got dead serious. \u201cThis is the song that turned me into an artist and not just a singer-songwriter,\u201d she told the crowd as part of the acclaimed Soho Sessions<\/a> series that brings A-list artists to more intimate spaces for various charities.<\/p>\n Morris is more accustomed to theaters and amphitheaters<\/a> these days. Morris solos the first verse before Yola, whose booming voice and ebullient stage presence across five songs earlier tonight was its own spiritual presence, joined her on the singer\u2019s breakout hit.<\/p>\n Morris turned the set, which included \u201cThe Bones,\u201d \u201cGirl,\u201d \u201cDreamsicle,\u201d and \u201c80s Mercedes,\u201d into a VH1 Storytellers<\/em>. \u201cGirl,\u201d she said, was inspired by \u201cweird shit with a friend,\u201d while the intro to \u201c80s Mercedes\u201d led Morris on a long story about her mom\u2019s obsession with Richard Gere and American Gigolo.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI started dating a little bit [after my divorce] and just met some fucking bums that couldn\u2019t pay the tab,\u201d she told the crowd on what inspired her song \u201cToo Good.\u201d \u201cI brought to my cowriters this idea, and I was like, \u2018I\u2019ve been dating a few losers. I think it\u2019s just a stroke of bad luck. It\u2019s gonna end soon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Elsewhere, she entranced on \u201cAngel From Montgomery,\u201d the 1971 John Prine song popularized by Bonnie Raitt three years later that was the \u201cfirst song I ever learned on guitar.\u201d<\/p>\n The event raised money for Music Will<\/a>, the largest nonprofit music education program for schools in the United States, and was sponsored by the FLAG Art Foundation<\/a>, a \u201cnonprofit exhibition space that mounts thematic contemporary art exhibitions centering on emerging and established artists from around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt was such a pleasure performing for an intimate listening crowd at Soho Sessions,\u201d Morris said in a statement. \u201cWe shared stories, I got to sing with the incredible Yola and help raise money for music education, an endeavor close to my heart.
