On the surface, Young seemed sturdy enough to face the onslaught of responsibility approaching. But when asked directly about her sobriety, she could turn wary, taking a deep pull on her tobacco vape and whispering, nearly inaudibly, that things were simply \u201cgood.\u201d<\/p>\n
The album, she said, was the best document of her recovery journey. \u201cIt was dark and I\u2019m very happy I\u2019m growing out of it,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to be an advocate for people who\u2019ve suffered, but I\u2019m not quite in a position to go, \u2018Sobriety is the way,\u2019\u201d she said. Not yet.<\/p>\n
With some downtime between scheduled appearances, Young had been hoping to take about two weeks to herself before the final promo push for \u201cMyself.\u201d But when Fallon\u2019s team offered a last-minute slot to perform \u201cDealer\u201d on \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d in late July, an impromptu New York trip was added to the calendar.<\/p>\n
It never happened. A few days after her return to London, Young relapsed, Shymansky said, and returned to treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to be really careful,\u201d he said in an interview in August. \u201cNo one really knows the depths of what she is dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cHer work ethic\u2019s amazing and her commitment to herself is amazing,\u201d Young\u2019s manager added, \u201cbut there\u2019s inevitably going to be moments where she can\u2019t keep up with both.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the album\u2019s release date nearing, Shymansky gave Young the option to pause everything, including delaying a fall headlining tour of the U.K. and North America, and focus on her health. Young, he said, chose to forge ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s worse for Lola: huge success or no success?\u201d Shymansky said. \u201cI think I\u2019ve come to the conclusion that within success, there\u2019s some form of structure and revenue and support system.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she returned to the stage this month, the singer was joined behind the scenes by a sober coach, and surrounded by a team dedicated to protecting her. \u201cThe reality is, we\u2019ve got an amazing inner circle that love and adore her,\u201d Shymansky said. \u201cBut everyone\u2019s on the [expletive] payroll.\u201d The parallel to his work with Winehouse was obvious. \u201cYou can\u2019t separate it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s uncanny.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he encouraged Young to not only put on a good face for fans. \u201cIf you\u2019re struggling, share it,\u201d he told her. \u201cExplain it to people. Give them a chance to show that we\u2019re in a different moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young is working on it. Earlier this month, she moved into a new apartment \u2014 the first real spoils of her pop success so far \u2014 and celebrated on social media with her old friend Violet, popping a bottle of sparkling tea in lieu of champagne.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited to start a new chapter of my life,\u201d she said, teary-eyed, in a video for her fans captioned \u201cnew beginnings.\u201d It was one more step forward.<\/p>\n
